Asan, South Korea

Asan is a beautiful place in the Korean Countryside, south of Seoul. It's famous for mountains, big universities, the childhood home of famous Yi Sun Shin and hot springs. There are plenty of things to do and see here. Visit the hot springs at Dogo, or check out Hyeongchoongsa, which is dedicated to Yi Sun Shin. Take a walk or water-ski around Shinjeong Lake. Stop by the lake-side restaurant for some delicious food. Shop, Korean style in the open-air market at the train station. It's a beautiful, peaceful place and definitely worth checking out during your time in Korea.

Things to do in Asan: Check out a Hot Spring

dogo-hot-springs.jpgAsan is very famous for its hot-springs. Royalty from past centuries used to make the trip here just to bathe in the waters reputed to have various healing properties.

If you go to downtown Asan, near Onyang Oncheon Station, there are at least 10 saunas you can go check out for a very reasonable price. My favorite one is the Grand Hotel. But, if you want luxury, head outside the city to either Dogo Hot Springs or Spavis. Both sites have outdoor play parks that you can use in the summer, but the best feature is their indoor saunas. They have a wide variety of baths and features so that you could spend hours there soaking and cleaning. Be sure to get a scrub down while you're there.

Hiking in Asan

asan-hiking.jpgThere are a huge number of mountains in Asan. You could hike for weeks and not cover them all. And the best part is that they're all connected. So, just go to tourist information and pick yourself up a local Asan map. Find a peak that looks interesting and locate the trail-head. It shouldn't be too hard to find the way. Just ask the locals or look for the other hikers heading up the mountain. Bring some water, snacks and your camera and you'll have hours of fun!

Visit Oeam Folk Village in Asan

oeam-folk-village-asan.jpgThis place is a beautiful little spot that is perfect for a few hours of rest and relaxation. There are old-style Korean houses, which people actually live in. There are lots of little games and traditional activities for you to do as well. Be sure to walk around the whole village and read the excellent descriptions of what everything is. However, perhaps the best thing about visiting the village is the traditional food you can have in the restaurants outside the gate. I highly recommend pajeon (green onion pancake) or kimchi-jeon (Kimchi-pancake).

Visit Hyeongchungsa Shrine in Asan, South Korea

hyeongchungsa-asan.jpgThis is a beautiful park, that was established in 1704 to honor Admiral Yi Sun Shin, creator of the Turtle Ship.

It's the perfect site for a nice walk or a picnic. Bring some food, drinks, and outdoor games and plan to make a day of it. It's a nice break from the concrete jungle.

Shopping in Asan

market-korea.jpgI'll be honest, there really isn't that much shopping to be had in Asan. Your best bet would be to head to neighboring Cheonan or a bit further to Seoul, where you'll be able to get anything that you need.

However, if you want to shop for some groceries, everything you need can be found in Asan. Near Onyang Oncheon, there is an excellent open air market. Prices are good, but be sure to bargain. And not too far from here is an Emart.

How to get to Asan

There are plenty of transportation options to get yourself to Asan, but it can be a little confusing due to the train station names. There is Cheonan/Asan Station + Asan Station, which is actually in Cheonan. It's still about 15 km from Asan proper. The train station that is actually in Asan is called Onyang Oncheon. It's right in the center of the action, with plenty of saunas around here. You can also take a bus to all the attractions from here.

There are also lots of buses that come here from downtown Cheonan or the Cheonan Train Station. Just look for the 9** series buses. There are also express buses to here from Gangnam Station in Seoul, as well as buses from various other locales in Korea.

Can I work in Asan, South Korea?

hoseo-university.jpgIf you want to work in Asan, there are a few options. Most people come here as English Teachers. The big unis are Hoseo, Soonchunghyang (SCH) and Sunmoon University. They all have plenty of foreign professors who teach English, along with a few who teach other subjects. As well, SCH and Sun Moon hire native English speakers to teach in the Asan public schools.

    Hi~ i am korean that lived in Asan(now i live in Australia).
    Asan is good city to travel. But you should know Asan is not a great city like Seoul.
