A guidebook for true explorers, the south Atlantic islands of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha are isolated and therefore a fascinating destination for travellers who enjoy a completely different vacation. Their remote location has led to a host of endemic plant species and large seabird colonies, meaning the islands appeal to botanists and birdwatchers the world over.

Tristan da Cunha

Tristan da Cunha, often called the world's loneliest island, and one of the most popular stamp and postal history collecting areas, was brought to the world's attention as recently as 1961 when smoke began pouring out of a volcano near Edinburgh, the island's only village . Ships were diverted to the island for emergency evacuation of the 300 islanders. Later, the modern world proved to be a weak magnet to the islanders, who, after the return of geological peace to Tristan da Cunha, voted nearly unanimously to return home. Ascension Island

Ascension Island is an isolated island of volcanic origin in the South Atlantic Ocean, around from the coast of Africa, and from the coast of South America. It is a dependency of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, which is to the southeast. The Island is named after the day of its recorded discovery, Ascension Day. It is located at .

The island is the location of Wideawake Airfield, which is a joint facility of the Royal Air Force and the United States Air Force. The island was used extensively by the British military during the Falklands War. Ascension Island hosts one of five ground antennas (others are on Kwajalein, Diego Garcia, Colorado Springs and Hawaii) that assist in the operation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) navigational system.

Ascension Island does not have its own flag or coat of arms. The Union Flag and Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom are used instead.

Tristan da Cunha

Tristan da Cunha () is a remote volcanic group of islands in the south Atlantic Ocean. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world,About.com: Geography lying from the nearest land, South Africa, and from South America. It is a dependency of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, to the north.

The territory consists of the main island Tristan da Cunha (area: ), the uninhabited Nightingale Islands and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible Island and Gough Island.

St Helena

Saint Helena ( saint h?--n?), named after St Helena of Constantinople, is an island of volcanic origin and a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. The territory of Saint Helena consists of both the island of Saint Helena, and also the dependencies of Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.

The island has a history of over 500 years since it was first discovered as an uninhabited island by the Portuguese in 1502. Britain's second oldest remaining colony (after Bermuda), Saint Helena is one of the most isolated islands in the world and was for several centuries of vital strategic importance to ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa. For several centuries, the British used the island as a place of exile, most notably for Napoleon Bonaparte, Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo and over 5,000 Boer prisoners.
