Ascot: The Ultimate Neckwear

The ascot is a tie that only the brave and the confident wear. It is a symbol of style. Today, although the ascot appears rarely, when it does it makes a statement - and it seems to be popping up more and more. Is it possible the ascot is making a comeback?

The term 'ascot' means different things in different areas. In America it is synonymous with cravat, but in Europe an ascot is a wide pale gray cravat made of patterned silk and worn only with very formal morning wear, to weddings, or England's Royal Ascot races (it's namesake).

So, if you have just the right occasion, then go ahead and don an ascot, proudly.

How To Wear an Ascot

When it comes to formal wear, men's choices are so limited-why not set yourself apart by wearing an ascot?
How To Wear an Ascot | ehow.com
How to Wear an Ascot. For an interesting fashion twist, incorporate an ascot into an outfit. It takes confidence and a little bit of an edge to pull it off, but worn the right way, an ascot gives the wearer a look of sophistication...
Long Live The Ascot
Long Live The Ascot This is an ad from a recent Brooks Brothers catalog, and they continue to feature the ascot as one of their featured items, and I applaud them.

Confidence Necessary

One thing needed to wear an ascot is confidence. Attitude is critical. You must come across as completely comfortable in the ascot, any instinct for fidgeting must be fought off. You have to convey that you are man enough to wear an ascot, without strutting like a peacock (and looking like an ass).

The best way to do this is to pretend it is a normal tie - neither show it off nor hide it. Do not try to draw attention to the ascot. If you are self-conscious about the ascot, then it's best not to wear one.

Shown here is David Beckham (with wife Victoria Beckham), who wears it extremely well.

Michael Johns

Michael Johns was sent packing from American Idol season 7, many believing too soon. Twice on the show Johns sported an ascot chosen by Idol stylist Miles Siggins. Siggins said Michael Johns needed "a recognizable brand, and I was thinking dandy rocker." However, it has been questioned, was the ascot to blame?

Important!

Carl Sandburg ~

I took to wearing a black tie known as the Ascot, with long drooping ends. I had seen pictures of painters, sculptors, poets, wearing this style of tie.

A Comeback?

Do you think the ascot is making a comeback?

Loading

I think so.

TheLifestyleChanger says:

I hope so - they are suave and sophisticated.

Ladymermaid says:

I certainly think that the ascot could become popular once again. We are slowly moving away from being overly conservative and the bow tie is a little too little of a true tie (too minny mousey ha).

Crackback Jack says:

Confidence and style and you can pull this off.
It has almost become my trademark and after the initial laugh
Most say " looks great and you can pull it off"

Susan52 says:

I hadn't thought about it until now, but judging by the evidence you've presented, it looks like it! I think it takes a particularly stylish man to wear one. Trying to picture one on my husband . . .

Squidster says:

I sure hope so. I think they're a very fashionable alternative to the ol' necktie.

I doubt it.

Your Thoughts

What do you think about the ascot?

I like it.

TheLifestyleChanger says:

Love the ascot. Very smooth, suave and sophisticated. Takes a lot more savoir faire to wear it well than it does to wear a tie.

cherangelry says:

I love that the ascot can be worn by just about anyone and used to create several different looks. I mean, Austim Powers, Fred Jones, Cary Grant & Brendan Urie all wear their ascots to create extremely different looks. That's what makes this undervalued piece of the masculine accessory department inherently classic.

Nah.

I think the ascot is a tie which you would definitely have to have an appropriate personality to wear. It's not for everyone. Wishing you and yours a wonderful and peace filled holiday season. The very best of seasonal blessings.

LOL This is a great subject. I'm laughing at the variety of people in the pictures, from Cary Grant to Austin Powers and just about everyone in between. Love it on Cary Grant. Austin? Well, a totally different look for him altogether so maybe he shouldn't count. Creative lens! Great job!

I rather like these and think they can give a gentleman a somewhat distinguished look. Not sure if it is still considered a faux pas today if you wear one to a wedding without being the groom. Interesting topic for a lens; I hope this tie makes a comeback! ^:)^
