Ashanti furniture is made by craftsmen in the Ashanti region of modern day Ghana in West Africa. African furniture as a whole is growing in popularity in the West and this is set to increase further with the recent election of Barack Obama to the White House. This lens explores the range of Ghanaian furniture from the Ashanti chairs to the mudcloth storage cabinet. I'll also provide links for where you can buy Ashanti furniture and decor.
The Growing Popularity of African Furniture
Its growth in the Western World
With the recent election in America of the first ever African-American president, African inspired decor and design has grown in popularity. In the past, art, accessories and furniture from the African continent has been enjoyed mainly by people who were rich and could travel. They brought back artefacts, masks and sculpture that most people could only imagine or see in books and museums. However, nowadays, more and more retailers in the United States and Europe are selling genuine African furniture and products at very affordable prices.
African furniture and decor appeals to a wide array of people in the United States. For some, it is an appreciation of rustic beauty from a far away continent, for others, they signify a link to their family's historical cultural heritage that many like to celebrate. Africa is a diverse continent with a multitude of ancient and fascinating cultures and peoples. Each has their own unique style and artistic history. The market for African-made art and design is surely going to grow further during the presidency of Barack Obama.
Who are the Ashanti people?
A brief introduction to the Ashanti history

The Ashanti people are a tribe in the West African country of Ghana in the Ashanti Region. Before the British invasions in the late 19th Century, the Ashanti had a large and influential empire that stretch across much of the West African region. It was later referred to as the Asanteman or Ashanti Confederacy.
Today, the Ashanti number around 7 million which is around 35% of the total Ghanain population. They remain one of the largest and most influential tribal groups in the country. However, nowadays the tribal divides are not as important as they were a century ago. Nationalism and indeed religion hold more weight but the linguistic and historical ties are still recognised.

The Gye Nyame Symbol.
What does the symbol mean?

The Gye Nyame symbol is an extremely well known and popular image in Ghana and especially for the Ashanti people. It symbolises the power of God to make all things equal and his omnipotence.
From the Akan aphorism: Abode santann yi firi tete; obi nte ase a onim ne ahyease, na obi ntena ase nkosi ne awie, GYE NYAME.
Literal translation: This great panorama of creation dates back to time immemorial; no one lives who saw its beginning and no one will live to see its end, EXCEPT GOD.

- Lovely selection of ashanti furniture. It seems to have a warmth to it (not sure if that's the right word to describe it) but I find it very appealing.
