Clarify your goals, write them down, help your subconscious to achieve them

Do you have clear goals? Have you written them down? We are always hearing about goals and how important they are and yet most people only have vague goals.

A study was conducted with the Yale Graduating Class of 1953. They surveyed all the students asking them whether they had written down goals for their life:

  • 3% had put their goals in writing
  • 97% had not written down goals or even thought of any at all.

Twenty years later, these same people were re-interviewed. The astonishing result was the the 3% who had written down their goals were enjoying incomes ten times greater than those of the 97% combined!

Many people think of goals in terms of their buying power for materialistic items like a big house with a pool, a sports car, a boat, a new kitchen but for a truly balanced life choose goals in each of these six areas:

  1. Family and Home
  2. Financial and Career
  3. Spiritual and Ethical
  4. Physical and Health
  5. Social and Cultural
  6. Mental and Educational

Rather than only financial goals, consider the sort of family you want to have, the sports you wish to pursue, clubs you wish to join, community groups you can contribute to, voluntary programs you can join, how far you want to go in formal education and the subjects you will study in your adult life. I have a friend who is reading two Bachelor degrees simultaneously with The Open University, just for interest. Success University offer short on-line courses in all areas of life.

Goals must always be stated in the positive. Your subconscious mind cannot distinguish between a positive and negative so if you say, "I will not be untidy", your subconscious interprets that as, "I will be untidy." That will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Be specific in your goals. "I want to earn more money" is not specific and you may receive the answer with a 1% pay increase. Instead state, "By age XX, I shall be earning XXX amount of money." You might say, "I want a sports car" and be offered a 20 year old MG by a friend when in fact you had a Ferrari in mind. If you can clearly see what it is that you want, if you can visualise and describe it in writing or with a photo or drawing, your subconscious will lead you along the path to making a reality.

If you want to visit somewhere unknown, you need a map. So think of written down goals as creating your map. Choose words and pictures to cement your destinations in your mind. Make a montage and call it your goals board, or your dream board if you prefer.

If you want to own a certain model of car, find a good photo and include it in the montage. Perhaps you want to visit somewhere specific eg Paris or Japan so find a photo which instantly makes you think of that place. Cut photos out of catalogues.

Place this dream board where you can see it daily. Share it with people close to you as this makes a commitment on which your subconscious can focus.

"If a man knows not what harbour he seeks, any wind is the right wind." - Seneca

Someone write, "A dream is a goal without legs." To change a dream into a reachable goal requires clarity, details, a clear vision on which you can focus so that you can recognize opportunities along the way to its attainment.

If you do not know what your goal looks like, how will you recognize it when you reach it?

When the WHY is Big Enough

Turning a dream into a goal to achieve reality

To succeed in anything, especially something that requires change from the current situation, we must have a WHY that is big enough.

1. What is it that gets you so excited you can't sleep at night?
2. What is the real reason for you becoming what you want to be?
3. Why do you want to break out of the rat race and achieve your freedom?

When the WHY is big enough, the HOW doesn't matter!

Any obstacle can be overcome if you know WHY you want to overcome it.

When you decide to make changes, people around you will feel uncomfortable as you are challenging their comfort zones. You are going against the norm and they will try to keep you as one of them. They may laugh at you. They may tell you are crazy to even imagine you could achieve what you want. They may tell you that you are just dreaming and will never be able to do that something different.

It will take guts to stick to your plans, your wishes, your hopes and dreams. You will need to be laser-focused. Others will try to stop you, try to keep you back.

But nothing will happen until someone becomes excited. If that someone is you, you need to know WHY you are planning this future. WHY do you want it? WHY are you prepared to leave your comfort zone to seek a better life?

When the WHY is big enough, the HOW does not matter. The WHY will remove the obstacles if you become a RHINO head set on success. You will become so tough that nothing will stop you.

To remind yourself constantly of the WHY, W-R-I-T-E I-T D-O-W-N.

You have heard that before, right? But have you done it? Have you written down your goals with the WHY clearly stated?

A dream only becomes reality when it is stated as a goal with a WHY translated into WHY you MUST have it. Think about that. You might say that you would like an idyllic holiday on a tropical island. That is a vague dream. Now turn it into a WHY: "I want to take my family on an idyllic holiday on a tropical island because the children want to see tropical fish when snorkelling and I want to improve my windsurfing in the heat." That sounds better than taking the kids to see fish in an aquarium and swimming in a crowded seaside holiday resort whilst your windsurfing is done in a wet suit on a reservoir in the cold.
Now make it a MUST: "I must take my family on an idyllic holiday on a tropical island because I want my children to experience the thrill of seeing tropical fish close up on a coral reef and I must windsurf with the sun on my back."

Now transform that dream into a vision statement from the MUST sentence and paste it in large letters where you can see it everyday, along with photos of those tropical fish and someone windsurfing in the sun.

Your subconscious mind believes that what you tell it is your reality. Turn the dream into a statement IN THE PRESENT TENSE. Now you have the WHY you MUST have it, your subconscious will find the HOW and remove the obstacles.

Achieving What You Really Want

Steps to achieving your goals ...

Get yourself into a good OK state one in which you can think freely and in a relaxed way. Maybe you have a place where you can go that is conducive to this state - if so go there.
Ask yourself 'What do I really want?' Now ask it again and again until you are really tapping into what you really want. Keep going until you have stripped away any element of 'should' or 'must' or 'try to'. As someone said to me recently 'Don't should on yourself.'
Check that the goal that you are considering is within your control - that it does not depend on anyone else for you to achieve it. For that reason it is likely to be in the category of skills that you would like to develop or the kind of person that you wish to become or a purpose in life that you want to fulfill.
Imagine a time when you would like to have achieved this and step into that time - 'stand in the accomplishment'. I have a friend who has bought a plot of land and who is having a house built. The house is only in the planning phases but he often goes to his plot of land and stands in it imagining himself in the finished house.
As you stand in the accomplishment explore what that is like from your own eyes and ears and feelings. What do you see, hear and feel both physically and emotionally? Is there anything that would make this more satisfying for you - if so make it that now. Explore what it is like to be in the accomplishment of the goal until you have enriched it in all senses.
Think of the significant people in your life. Take each of them by the hand with you into this desired state. Have them explore it with you. How is it compelling for them - as much of a WIN for them as it is for you? Is there anything that you need to do to make it a WIN for them - if so do that now.
Ask yourself how the realisation of this goal is a step on a journey to a higher goal, a longer-term vision or purpose. You may not have words for this but may have a sense of how this is a part of something much bigger.
As you imagine yourself having achieved the goal think back to the steps that you took to get to this point of achievement. What price did you have to pay to get here? What was the first step on your journey that set the momentum going?
Decide how you can remember the feeling of being here in this desired state. Maybe there is an image or a sound or a touch that can enable you to recall the state whenever you choose. Decide what you want it to be.
Now step out of the desired state so that you are back in the present. What is the first step that you are willing to absolutely commit to that will move you in the direction of achieving the goal? Are you willing to commit to this - if so what is it specifically that you are willing to commit to and when are you willing to do this. Now do it!

Make A Dreamsboard Collage

Cut out pictures of what you want and paste them into a collage you can see every day

Here is a story to make you smile.

Billy was a new representative for a network marketing company and even though he had just started, he was beginning to experience a great amount of success. The reason? Billy was able to work himself into a white heat of passion for his goals and dreams. In fact, his first goal was to be able to make enough extra money to afford a brand new Cadillac.

Billy would cut out pictures of Cadillac's and paste them in every room of the house. He pasted the largest one right in the middle of the bathroom mirror so that every morning he would be reminded of his goal.

Unfortunately, Billy's wife was not a believer and did not share Billy's devotion to goal sharing. She hated all the pictures around the house and Billy's blind belief that visualizing goals can help them come true. The thing she hated most was the big Cadillac picture in the middle of her bathroom mirror. Every morning when Billy left, she would take down the picture. Every evening before Billy would go to bed, he would put the picture of his Cadillac back on the mirror.

This pasting and re-pasting went on for 6 months. Then something happened. Billy had saved enough money from his network marketing business for a down payment for his Cadillac. That evening Billy confidently drove home in his brand new Cadillac, honked the horn when he arrived, and sat in glory as his spouse looked out the window in amazement!

The next morning there was a picture of a mink coat pasted on the bathroom mirror!
