Grandma has tips on everything!

I've been in the "parenting business" for 28 years now. I've done so well, I've been promoted to "Grandma". I made a lot of mistakes over the years, but I did manage to learn a few things as well. Grandma's have learned where to find the free stuff, the fun stuff, and we have a lot of tips on keeping children happy, and busy!

Personally, I never got along with my Mother. My Grandma was another story all-together! I worshipped her. She was laid back, yet could be fiesty, she would let us experiment in cooking, she played baseball with us! She was super-cool. Grandma's house was a haven. That is what I want my home to be for my Grand babies. A fun, safe haven.

Contained in this Article you will find loads of things to keep your Grand Kids happy and comfy while at your house. This will be a compliment to my "Club Grandma" blog. Enjoy!

Grandma vs. Mom

They are actually a team!

The little ones do not see their Grandma the same way their Mother does. To the children's Mother, Grandma is a crazy woman (maybe going through the change, maybe just happier being crazy), and NOT the same woman who raised them. The Grand children see a fun, easy going, sweet person who always makes them feel comfortable and loved.

When my Youngest Grandchild was born, his Mother bought him a shirt that said "What happens at Grandma's STAYS at Grandma's!" How true. She knew me well enough to figure that out anyway!

Mom (and I've been there, so I know) is often too tired for fun. Maybe too stressed. Mom has a lot going on. Grandma, however, has probably mellowed with age and learned not to sweat the small stuff.

Mom plays an important role for the child, and so does Grandma, and together, what a team they can make!

So WHAT'S so fun about Camp Grandma's?

Kids love it!

In the majority of cases, Grandma does not have the ultimate responsibility for the child. This makes being fun easy! Yes, we care about nutrition, but it's Mom's job to keep the final tabs on it. Grandma can be a little more generous with the candy and cookies. Grandma can usually afford to take the kids places, and if not, Grandma always knows where there is a park. Grandma always has toys, coloring books, stuffed animals and a huge supply of appropriate videos. Best of all, Grandma has a warm smile, and a comforting hug, and always knows the right thing to say.

It may be Camp Grandma's is fun just because sometimes Parents and kids need a break from each other. It's common knowledge that food tastes better at Grandma's (No one really knows why, but children prefer food cooked by people other than their parents)

Entertainment for the little ones

Club Grandma style

There are so many options for entertaining kids today, as well as options to offer them a few "Old School" ideas. Moat kids, even as young as 3 or 4 are able to play computer games. Reading is always a good option, and of course, watching videos is fun. Here are a few suggestions for keeping it fun at Club Grandma.

Andy's Airplanes:
Andy is an animated young boy who travels the world in different air crafts. Kids who go along with Andy learn about the aircraft (Do I see a future airplane model builder?) but they learn about the destinations. There is a cute interactive site and some information on the Story and even a spot where kids can ask questions!

Free Video with Andy's Airplanes Fan Club Membership!

Sesame Street

Now, my Son used to watch this...20 some odd years ago! It's still going strong, with some of the original characters, and some new. The premise is basically the same, kids can learn and have fun. Links coming soon to fabulous Sesame Street items.

Educational Software
Kids love to play on the computer, even if they happen to be learning something! This site has everything from pre-school materials to learning second languages!

Comfort at Club Grandma's

Ages 5-10

Club Grandma should offer comfort and familiarity. Make each Grand child feel unique and welcomed. I have 6 Step children, so I had "grandkids" quite young. I didn't have a lot of money when the first grandkids started arriving, but I wanted to make them feel welcomed at Grandma's. I can remember fashioning a bath robe for them out of beach towels. They were very impressed! Now, when I can, I try to get each child some things that will be just for them, and represents comfort and happiness at Grandma's.

Sleep Sweetly Maybe it is a "grandma" thing, but I feel that if a child is all comfy and cozy at bedtime and when they sleep, they are just generally happier. I have my own memories from back in the day at my Grandma's house. Feather-beds, warm PJ's and all.

About the Writer

Who is writing this?

On January 7, 2009- I became a Squid Angel! What a proud day for me! As of Oct 2008, I am happy to say I am now a Giant Squid. I have 85lenses to date and am really enjoying squidoo. Not just writing, but reading other lenses. If you are a Grandma perhaps you would be interested in my blog "Grandma's Online (GO!) I have a lot of Grandma related things on there and will soon have online jobs available for Grandmas as well as tips to start their own businesses.

I have a Table of Contents that lists my Articles by topic. You can find it HERE>

Grandma's "Goodie" Stash

Club Grandma ALWAYS has the best goodies. From Home made cookies to the finest "kid choice" candy, stock up at your Camp Grandma's.

Home made treats:

NO BAKE COOKIES (FROM: Childrens Recipes )

2 cups sugar
1/2 cups butter
3 Tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup milk
3 cup oatmeal.
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
wax paper

Directions:

Have your wax paper spread and ready for the cookies. An adult can help you with the boiling part.

Boil together sugar, butter, cocoa and milk for approx 2 1/2 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add vanilla and oatmeal. Stir quickly. Drop by spoonfuls onto wax paper. Put into fridge to harden. YUM!!

CINNIMON TRIANGLES:

2-3 Taco sized flour tortillas (cut into quarters)
Cinnimon/sugar mixture

Heat oil in pan or deep fryer. Add the tortillas and cook until golden brown. Remove from oil (try to remove as much oil as possible) and place into a bowl with Cinnamon/Sugar Mix. Coat Triangles. Cool on paper towels.

FREE SAMPLES; You've got to try this. I did!

Today, I received in the mail, the free samples of soups that I'd requested. OMG! There were 10 packets of Soups, with flavors like "Cheesy Enchilada" and "Tantelizing Tortilla" and of course, Tomato and Chicken noodle. I got TEN of them, all for the cost of S&H ($5 and well worth it.)

This company will also send packets to people in the Military. Besides the single serve packets, they also have 4 serving packets and a whopping 17 serve pouches!

I'm very impressed with this company. It did take 3 weeks to get the samples, but now that they have arrived, I'm thrilled with the value!!

These are great for "quick" lunches for the Grands!
