What does the Bible say about asking?

I recently did a bible study to find out what all the Bible says about asking. I was very encouraged when I saw all of the verses about asking next to each other. God really does want us to ask Him for things! There are a few pre-requisites mentioned, but for the most part we have not because we ask not!

Bible Verses about asking

Solomon asks for wisdom rather than riches or fame

1 Kings 3:5-13 (NKJV)

5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask! What shall I give you?"

6 And Solomon said: "You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

7 Now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in.

8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted.

9 Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?"

10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

11 Then God said to him: "Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice,

12 behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you.

13 And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days.

Asking God

Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking

Matthew 7:7-11 (NKJV)

7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Bible verse on asking God

Ask, Seek, Knock

Luke 11:9-13 (NKJV)

9 "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

11 If a son asks for bread[a] from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?

12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

John 16:23-24 (NKJV)
23 "And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.

24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

God gives generously when asked

Ask according to God's will

1 John 5:14-15 (NKJV)

The power of prayer is so amazing. God asks only that you ask of a pure heart, and you will receive? but I have also realised that if something is not meant to be yours, however much you pray I dont think that you will receive it, or that it will last once you receive it. Trust and give all things big or small to Him in prayer, ask with an honest, sincere heart, and God, the giver of all things, the carrier of all things will carry you and give to you accordingly. Prayer puts me at peace, especially when I give all things to him, I must train myself to give without reservation.

I was preparing a Sunday School class on the bibical principal of "Asking" after hearing recently about the book "women don't ask". Realizing "asking" was often directed by God, this set of Bible verses was exactly what i was looking for....at just the right time. Thank you for taking the time to collect all the verses with headings in one place so I didn't have to search and could just seek the knowledge from the words as I mine their meaning. I was especially surprised that I hadn't remembered the Luke and Matthew verbage of Jesus' words were so exactly similar that this passage must be important to study. Thanks again for blessing me today.

    Hi
I enjoyed the verses. However, I'm looking for the verse that says: the reason you don't have what you want is because you don't ask." I'm paraphrasing. Can you help me out?

I want to thank you for listing the scriptures on asking. It has been helpful to me, because it is through asking the Lord that I have seen His miracles recently.

A nice group of texts: as you mention, often we have not because we ask not; St. James says exactly that (James 4:2). And the one time someone (Ahaz) says "I will not ask", he is rebuked (Isa 7:12).

I think that these scriptures are so awesome for the soul. Praise the Lord for what you have done. I would prefer though more KJV theres alot that is missing when you dont. It doesnt give the whole flavor of the word of God. Maranatha... The Lord is Coming very soon. Get ready! Be ready! Signs of the times are everywhere.
