My Name is Indigo
Born January 27, 2006
Indigo is now 3 years old! I got her as a little pup when she was just short of three months old - April 14, 2006. I found her on Petfinder.com, one of the greatest places to find the greatest animals that need forever homes. She was a little stinky from being in with all her little brother and sisters but I knew she was the one for me.
She came running out of the house and into my arms, like she had been waiting forever for me to come and get her. She played in the grass and hopped around like a little bunny- there was no doubt, she was going to be mine!
I told the lady I would take her and after signing all the adoption papers and paying her ransom, we were on our way home.
I decided to get a new puppy after loosing Bear, my best friend of 11 years. Bear died on December 12, 2005 from a tumor that burst on her spleen. We didn't even know she had one. She was healthy and happy and had absolutely no signs of old age or any illnesses; she just got up that dreadful day and didn't have enough energy to move. She was confused and very sick. The emergency vets tried for eight hours to save her life. We gave her blood transfusions and platelets, but we couldn't get her stabilized enough to do surgery. I had to say good-by to her that day and it was, by far, one of the worst days of my life. Bear was my only child, my friend, my protector. I couldn't even bring myself to let her lifeless body go to be cremated. But I did. I saved a bit of her soft ear hair and put it in a little pewter charm that I wear around my neck; her ashes are in a special box on my dresser.
After many days of coming home to a silent house, I couldn't take it any longer. Early in 2006 I started looking on petfinder.com for a new best friend. I looked and I looked, trying at first to find a Bear clone. Hoping if I waited just the right amount of time, I would find a puppy that might be Bear reincarnated. Then one day in April, 2006 I saw her, this fluffy little spec of a black and white dog in the arms of her shelter mom, her name online was Opal. It was all I could do to wait for the shelter mom to call me back. I filled out my application and waited. Finally the email came - "Yes, Opal is still available". It was like Christmas day, I couldn't wait to go and see her! So I took a friend and we went to meet my soon to be new furry little daughter.
Indigo is not Bear, she has a wonderful, quirky little personality all her own. I just love her to pieces! She's gonna be a star someday, I just know it.
Rough Start
Indigo was born on January 27, 2006. I adopted her on April 14th, 2006.
Indigo broke her leg in July, 2006 when I was out of town for work. Her dog sitter left her in the car, unattended, with the windows down. When she tried to follow him, she slid down the outside of the car and her little leg got caught in the door handle. As she continued out the window the door handle snapped her little leg in half.
Putting no damper on her puppy attitude, she endured the cast and the following physical therapy, getting back to full function (almost) in about five months. She still has lameness after playing, but we are hoping this will go away as the bones continue to heal
In the mean time, she is full of fun and puppy games. We are planning on her becoming a therapy dog so we can make other people happy just by knowing and playing with Indigo.
She is my furry little angel and my monster dog all in one.
My Name is Arrow
I am a hansom little devil!
Arrow - Born around Feb 02, 07. Adopted May 07Arrow came from a Pound in Southern Illinois. A very nice woman took him home from the pound so he would not be put down and she found a no-kill shelter in northern Illinois for him to go to. He was about 4 months old when he was found, but no one knew his story as to how he came to be a pound-puppy.
I found Arrows picture on Pet Finder.com. They didn't even have a bio on him yet. I fell in love with his hansom little face and ran to get him. The shelter he was in was loud and dark and he was so thin and frightened. I took him into the lobby of the shelter, where it was a bit quieter and he snuggled up to my legs like he had known I was there to take him home. It only took me a few seconds to decide he would be ours.
Arrow got his name because he was so long and so skinny when I got him at 5 mnths old - he only weighed 14 pounds. He is now 30 pounds and All Muscle!. He and Indigo get along like they were born next to each other. They play all day and have a blast.
Arrow did some Agility Training last summer. He did pretty good, except he couldn't stop running around and peeing on stuff. I am hoping the summer of 09 is the summer he will show what he can really do.
Together we are one big happy family. I got my two knuckle-heads and they got a mom that loves them very much.

TIPs, Tricks and Just Stuff I Want to Talk About
- To save some money when buying your pet meds, find the cheapest price online, including shipping, and then ask your vet if they will give you the same price. Mine does and maybe yours will too.
- When training your puppy to let you know when they need to go out, tie a bell on the door and show them how to ring it. Indigo is not a barker or a whiner, so I was very happy that she learned this trick really fast.
- If your Dog doesn't like taking a bath and they know what the word BATH means, you can use this as a tool to make your dog behave. My last dog Bear hated baths and whenever she was doing something I wanted her to stop doing I would just say, "Do you want to take a Bath" and she would just slink away. It's not in any training manuals, but it worked for me.
- Are you just as tired as I am of people quoting the Dog Whisperer? He's made everyone an expert on dog training.
... secretly, I would like to meet him, but I still get tired of everyone quoting him.
Our Wish List
Everyone has one.
- We would like this site to make lots of money for the ASPCS
- We would like all dogs and cats on Petfinder.com to find a loving, warm and cozy home of their own.
- We would like to someday do more for homeless and neglected animals than we can afford to do now.
- Oh yea, we would like to get a video camera someday to take funny videos of Indigo and Arrow. Saving our pennies for that one. (this wish is a little selfish, but it is a wish list after all and memories are all I am gonna have someday of these little furry wonders; got to document all I can.)
