My Great Life
Meet Kitai. Adopted from a kill shelter he is now hard at work being an unofficial goodwill ambassador for shelter dogs everywhere.Kitai is a fabulous dog. Everywhere I take him people stop on the street and ask what breed he is. For us it's the perfect opportunity to let them know that he was adopted from a Humane Society. No kidding, their jaws drop and they exclaim "No way! You found him at a shelter? But he's so cute!" We love when that happens. We know that we are helping to dispel the myth that shelter dogs are rejects with temperment or health issues.
Then people would ask if they could take a picture of him with their cell phone cameras to show their friends and families. I realized this was an opportunity to show the world what a special dog he is so I created a website all about Kitai to let the world know what gems are at the shelter waiting for a home.
What You Should Know About Shelter Dogs
- Myth 1. Dogs in Shelters bite or are mean.
Kitai came out of the shelter a truly great dog. With a gentle spirit ready to be a friend to almost all. He had an aggression problem with dogs taller then himself but over the years we've almost overcome this one issue.
- Myth 2. Dogs in shelters aren't housebroken.
In the 3 years I've had the pleasure of being his owner, he has had 2 accidents in the house. Not bad eh?
- Myth 3. All dogs in shelters are mixed breeds or mutts.
Not true. I learned that there are many beautiful purebred dogs available at shelters. It was an American Eskimo I met that was adopted from the pound that motivated me to go to a shelter instead of a breeder when my last dog passed away.
- Myth 4. It's better to get a puppy then an older dog.
After adopting Kitai I realized I would never want another puppy again. Once a dog is more mature you can actually know it's personality which makes it far easier to find a dog you are truly compatible with. With a puppy you really don't know for sure what their personality will be like as they mature.
- Myth 5. Shelter dogs are usually too old to train
Well he wasn't a senior but at 11 months of age Kitai was not a puppy per say. At almost a year old he was still a clean slate and needed to learn everything from how to walk on a leash to basic obedience like sit. He's even learned a bunch of cool tricks like:
1. Hop on my hind legs like a kangaroo
2. Crawl on my stomach
3. Hurdle over Mom's arm
4. Dance in circles on my hind legs
5, High five
6. Nap time
7. Speak on command
8. Roll over
9. Sit up to say please
10. Shake
11. Sit with a treat on my nose - Wait for it...
12. Wave
