In Search of Litter Box Solutions
I have another lens about The Smart Cat Box, which most of our cats adapted to right away. However, a few of our older cats were reluctant to give up their favorite pine litter. Feline Pine has many advantages, but we were going through two bags a week and dealing with tracking and odor issues associated with used litter at the bottom of the box. While researching solutions to this problem, I found out about the Feline Pine Litter Box. We introduced two of these systems, and now our cats alternate between all-natural safflower seed litter and equally environmentally friendly pine litter. Here's How it Works
This litter box has an elevated insert with holes that are specially sized to sift the used sawdust into a separate box below. The sawdust drops down when stimulated by your cat, or when you stir it around with a scooper. The whole pellets stay in the upper box, while the sawdust drops down to and collects in the lower box. In theory, the litter box never has to be changed again, though you may clean and disinfect the bottom portion when dumping the used litter. New pellets are added to the top, and the sawdust is emptied from the lower box whenever you like. The Patented System Offers These Benefits
- Litter lasts longer since good pellets are not tossed out
- The litter box never needs to be changed again
- There is no tracking since the sawdust is removed
- Enhanced appearance... only the fresh pellets are visible
- The box smells like fresh pine
Save Our Sea Otters
Please Spread the Word
There is a serious threat to sea otters living off the coast of California, and the makers of Feline Pine have issued a special alert. Most domestic cats carry a parasite called Toxoplasmosis, which is to blame for nearly 20% of all sea otter deaths. Please do not flush cat waste down the toilet. The State of California has already passed a law requiring citizens to properly dispose of cat feces in the trash, and other states are in the process of addressing this issue as well. We keep a supply of paper bags near the litter box, and throw the bags directly in the outdoor waste bin. Monterey Bay Aquarium

Environmentally Friendly
Feline Pine is chemical free and great for composting. It breaks down easily and helps produce the ideal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. Compost can then be used for shrubs, trees, flower beds, and outdoor potted plants. Compost containing cat litter should not be used in vegetable gardens. Since cat feces may contain Toxoplasmosis, be sure to remove solid waste before putting the cat litter into your compost pile. You should also wear gloves and wash thoroughly after coming in contact with the decomposing materials. Of course, pregnant women should never come in contact with cat waste.
