About the ASPCA's NYC Programs

The ASPCA is dedicated to making New York a no-kill city and a safer, healthier environment for the companion animals who call it home. We bring free/low-cost spay/neuter services to all five boroughs via our mobile clinics, and our Humane Law Enforcement Agents are on the beat daily to investigate complaints of animal cruelty.

Whether you visit our Manhattan headquarters to adopt an animal, bring your pet to see a vet at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, or volunteer with us, we hope you'll be a part of our community.

Donate to the ASPCA Today!

The Society was formed to alleviate the injustices animals faced then, and we continue to battle cruelty today. Whether it's saving a pet who has been accidentally poisoned, fighting to pass humane laws, rescuing animals from abuse or sharing resources wi

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation to ASPCA from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. The author of this page doesn't either. And if you made it this far, thanks for caring.

Adopt an Animal Today!

List of Adoptable Animals at our Shelter
Because every New Yorker needs a furry sidekick.
Preparing Your Home for Your New Pet
Housekeeping is a casual affair for some—a little hair here or a stain there is of no major importance. Others are more fastidious. While adopting a shelter animal can turn your house into a home, your new furry friend could also turn it into a mess. With a little forethought and the following tips, you can have it all-happy, healthy pets and a clean, stylish home!
The Right Pet for You
We're thrilled—you're going to be joining the happy ranks of pet parents worldwide! The hardest decision you face may not be what to name your furry bundle of joy, or what color food bowl to buy, but simply what species your pet will be.
Top 10 Tips for Adopting the Perfect Family Pet
Congratulations, there's going to be a new addition to the household! Adopting a dog or cat for the family is a big decision, and the ASPCA wants to help you act with your head—as well as your heart. Thinking before you bring home that little (or not so little) bundle of joy can save the animal from being returned to the shelter, and can help ensure a long and satisfying life with your pet.

ASPCA Spay/Neuter Clinic

For pet owners receiving public assistance: ASPCA offers low-cost spay/neuter surgery via five fully-equipped mobile veterinary clinics that will travel directly to your neighborhood! Our mission is to put an end to the tragic euthanasia of adoptable animals within New York City's five boroughs by addressing the animal crisis at its source-in the heart of the city's local communities.

Click here to check the spay/neuter calendar for upcoming dates in your neighborhood.

Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital

Located at the ASPCA's New York City headquarters at 424 East 92nd Street, the Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital is a small-animal medical facility that offers veterinary evaluations, diagnostic tests, vaccinations, radiology, spaying/neutering, dentistry, biopsies, cremation services and more. The hospital is accredited by both the American Animal Hospital Association and the New York State Veterinary Medical Association. The only sources of income for the hospital are the fees charged for services and donations from the public. The hospital receives no government support.

To schedule an appointment please call: (212) 876-7700 ext. 4200.

Our hospital hours are:
Mondays through Fridays: 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Saturdays: 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
Closed Sundays

As we now work on an appointment-based schedule, please call in advance to schedule an appointment to see a veterinarian. (Pets in emergency situations will still be seen without an appointment.)

Volunteer at the ASPCA!

The ASPCA's volunteer program is vital to the Society's operation because our volunteers participate in nearly every area. Today, volunteers assist in the care and placement of the animals housed in our shelter, educate the public, and provide support for administrative programs.

- All volunteer opportunities are in New York City. Individuals unable to volunteer in New York City should contact their local animal welfare organization-visit our Shelter Database to find one near you now!
- Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older.
- Volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of 8 hours/month for 6 months.

Animal Fostering for the ASPCA

We're looking for a few good foster parents! The ASPCA Foster Care Program allows us to better prepare animals for adoption into permanent homes. Foster care volunteers receive food, supplies and/or medication to rehabilitate animals who need medical and/or behavioral therapy, or are still too young to be adopted.

Click here if you are interested in providing foster care to animals until they are ready to be placed into our adoption program.

Animal Assisted Therapy Classes

Get involved in animal-assisted therapy! The ASPCA offers pre-therapy training classes that prepare humans and their companion animals for Delta Society evaluation, as well as one-day workshops and continuing education classes for volunteers who are already registered with Delta Society.

In addition to enriching lives and improving human health, the animal-assisted therapy program at the ASPCA brings about greater community acceptance of dogs. Canines are seen as taking part in the healing processes of human beings in a variety of different situations, and facilities that would never have allowed dogs to enter before are now letting them in to serve humans in need of assistance.

Interested? See our schedule of upcoming classes.

Humane Law Enforcement

If you've watched Animal Precinct on Animal Planet, you're familiar with the work of the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Division, which is empowered to investigate all types of animal cruelty occurring within New York State. Our Agents investigate 400 to 500 cruelty complaints a month, which result in approximately 100 arrests per year.

Check out our FAQ on all things HLE!

I am quite saddened and angered over the abrupt KILLING of Oreo-after all he's been through! WHO is responsible for this execution, effected
so quickly,as to stifle those groups trying to send him to non kill sanctuaries, where he had a good chance of rehabilitation. This person should be relieved immediately of any further authority in life & death matters! Haven't you heard of Bad Rap, Best Friends, and Recycled Love-sanctuaries where 47 of 51 Michael Vick pit bulls were saved-even over the exhortations of PETA and Humane Society?
I am a contributor and have adopted at least one (3-legged) cat from you. I will now turn to other, more humane organizations who do not arbitrarely commit such outrageous, negative publicity acts. This latest episode I'm sure did wonders for your "caring," "helpful"
image. thank you, John Tembeck, Jr
