Living and Thriving with Asperger's Syndrome

If I say what a blessing Asperger's is you would probably think I'm crasy. Someone with this form of autism can present a number of challenges.

My grandson has Aspergers. Until he was diagnosis with this syndrome we figured he just was a quirky kid. He has been drawing since he was 2. Recognizable detailed drawings. Reading came easily. Other things not so.

It took a number of summers and much dedication to learn to ride a bike. Roller skating took persistence and determination but was accomplished. Team sports are still a struggle but coming along.

Their ability to focus on a topic while obsessive at times is a marvel in a world that demands instant gratification. Ky tends to switch the topics he focuses on about every two years. But then needs to find out everything he can about the subject.

Asperger Syndrome

Making the best of everything you have including Asperger's

Everyone has disabilities that they are dealing with it is part of being human. Some have vision issues, some mobility issues, some have reading issues; dealing with someone with Asperger's can be a lot of fun or very frustrating at times.

The whole family joins Ky in laughing when an idiom like you have a "chip on your shoulder" makes him stop and look at his shoulder wondering where the chip is. Thankfully Ky's got a wonderful sense of humor.

I marvel at Ky's ability to see the smallest detail of a subject and detail it in his drawings.

On the other hand when as most small boys go through the gun phase (you know where everything is a gun including a banana or pencil) Ky decided to draw pages and pages of guns all types, sizes and very detail including the labels to go with them the school was not overly thrilled to say the least. It cost Ky at least one suspension from school.

Thankfully this phaze is almost over, Ky is still in the 18 month to 2 year cycle on a topic.

Ky continues to thrive and grow as we find ways to help him medically and socially.
