Learn How to Get Better Searching Skills and Become Your Own Librarian

Are you struggling to find what you are looking for either online or offline? Do you need help with proper searching? Here are some helpful hints.

1. Realize that while Google and other search engines are good for some kinds of information many times you need to use other resources. Examples of the kind of information which you can easily find in Google include;

Basic information and definitions of terms
Information about businesses
General information about the weather, countries, states, and news

2. The kind of information which you can not easily find in Google includes:

Critical and scholarly articles
Information from databases
Full Text of many articles and books especially those, which are still under copyright.

So now that you have a better idea of when you should and should not search in Google how do you find the information you are looking for if it is not in Google?

1. Many public libraries have access to free databases, which you can search with simply a library card. Likewise many university and college libraries have them as well.
2. Ask a Librarian Many people hesitate to do this but we are well trained and are always willing to help you.
3. Depending upon the kind of information you are seeking you can try encyclopedias, journals, magazines, newspapers or books. These are still valid sources and contain much useful information.
4. Try searching Internet directories or other websites.
5. Try using the advanced features and search of Google,. This tool is often not used and is very helpful.

Happy Searching!

Librarians on Wikipedia

Learn all about librarians.

A librarian is an information professional trained in library and information science, which is the organization and management of information services or materials for those with information needs. Typically, librarians work in a public or college library, an elementary or secondary school media center, a library within a business or company, or another information-provision agency. Some librarians are independent entrepreneurs working as information specialists, catalogers, indexers and other professional, specialized capacities. Librarians may be categorized as a public, school, correctional, special, independent or academic librarian.

dyharris says:

I am looking into becoming a school librarian, don't like the ideal of having to teach in a classroom for 2 years though. That means a year or two getting certified in addition to library science program.
