How Much Does it Really Cost to Produce a Print?
Sometimes I marvel at the number (and cost!) of different products I use in the course of running my business, from marketing the business, to completing a portrait job from start to finish. Here's a list of my workflow, along with all the different products. [continue reading article] Do You Need a Studio?

When you start a portrait photography business it's hard not to have the dream of moving into your own studio space. I know. I've been there. I am going to ask you to think long and hard before you make such a move, and am going to tell you that it's probably not the best idea. I went from working out of my home to renting a studio to buying a building to renting a month-to-month space, to renting yet another space. Now I want back in my home, but I don't currently have a home where I could house a studio. [continue article]
Working with Seamless Background Paper
Seamless paper can give you a lot of versatility for not a whole lot of cash. I talk about where to buy seamless background paper, how to hang it, options for the floor, using gels on the background, and a few other things. This video is broken into two parts because Youtube doesn't allow videos longer than 10 minutes, and this one is just over 14 minutes. [continue article and see video] Learn How to Use Your Camera!
Understanding Exposure is one of the most frequently recommended books on learning the basics of photography. If you don't yet understand the concepts of shutter speed, aperture and ISO and how the three work together, then you need to get this book. It's written in a clear and simple manner, and LOTS of photographers have used it as their starting point. You need a clear grasp on these concepts before presenting yourself as a professional photographer, and this book will help you get there!
Should I Shoot Raw or JPG?
By default, our digital SLR's capture a jpeg or JPG file. This file captures the exposure and color as you set them. If you overexpose the image, your file will be overexposed. If you underexpose the image, your file will be overexposed. Set the wrong white balance? Again, your color is going to be off. Sure, you can fix some of these problems in Photoshop by fiddling with the levels, curves and color balance. If your image if overexposed, though, you're pretty much out of luck since the highlights go to pure white and there's no getting that back in Photoshop. Lots of photographers compensate for the bad color and exposure by converting the image to black and white, and making that file available unavailable in color. Not the best solution. some of my favorites to help
I am addicted to books about business, and the ones I've listed below are some that have inspired me the most. They are not specifically about photography, but the concepts can certainly can be applied towards your photography business. Read and enjoy!
Want To Get Those Creamy Out-of-Focus Backgrounds?
All other things being equal, the smaller your f/stop number, the more you are able to blur your background. These are a couple of great little lenses for those who want the tools to achieve a shallow depth of field without spending a whole lot of cash on a lens. Good starter lenses to help you achieve those creamy backgrounds, and to expand your low-light capabilities. Both of these lenses will enable you to shoot at an aperture as open as f/1.8, which is probably a whole lot more than you can achieve with the kit lens that came with your camera.
