1. Apple iPhone with video I Want It!
It's not perfect, but it's close enough. Apple's megahyped smart phone splits the difference between multimedia portable, Web appliance, and cell phone elegantly enough to earn a spot atop our Must-Have Gadgets list. Still, we feel bad for all those early adopters in light of the recent $200 price cut.
2. Apple iPod Nano (third generation, 4GB, silver) with video I Want It!
Apple's revamped iPod Nano has more than just a new squat shape. It's the first Nano to play back video, and it does it well, thanks to its colorful, 2-inch screen. The scroll wheel is a bit smaller and harder to navigate for the big-handed, but at less than $200 for the 8GB model and less than $150 for the 4GB model, we think the new Nano is a nice improvement over previous generations.
3. Vudu with video I Want It!
DVD- and video-rental stores took a big hit when Netflix launched, and now Netflix may take a hit now that Vudu's here. This set-top box gives you instant access to thousands of movies--including brand-new DVD releases--for $1 to $4 for rental or $5 to $20 to buy outright. With a bunch of major studios on board and a reasonable $400 price tag, Vudu may have a bright future ahead of it.
4. Nintendo Wii with video I Want It!
The Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 may be the only boxes in town for hard-core gamers, but the Wii gets all the bonus points for mass appeal. Nintendo's generation-transcending console is in high demand, thanks to its revolutionary motion-sensing controller and fun titles.
5. Apple MacBook with video I Want It!
Gamers are better served by the Dell XPS M1710, but Apple's Editors' Choice-winning Core 2 Duo MacBook may offer the most laptop bang for the buck. The MacBook Pro's little sibling offers top-notch performance for the price ($1,099 to $1,499, depending on the configuration), the ability to run both Mac OS X and Windows XP, and, of course, Apple's ubiquitous sense of style.
6. Sling Media Slingbox A/V with video I Want It!
Want to watch TiVo'd shows at a coffee shop, the ball game on a plane, or C-Span at a sports bar? All you need is a Windows XP laptop or Windows Mobile handheld, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a Slingbox. Of the three brand-new additions to the Slingbox lineup, we love the Slingbox A/V's $180 price tag and simple setup the best.
7. Sony PSP (black/slim)with video I Want It!
If you're looking for a portable gaming-and-multimedia machine, the redesigned Sony PSP should be at the top of your list. Compared to its predecessor, the Editors' Choice-winning handheld has faster loading times, video output to TVs, more responsive controls, and a 19-percent reduction in body fat. If you've already got a PSP, it may not be worth buying the slimmer one; if you're looking to buy one for the first time, this is the one to get.
8. Samsung LN-T4665F with video I Want It!
LCD FTW! Samsung's 46-inch 1080p HDTV has the best picture quality David Katzmaier has seen in an LCD, and it leaves plasma TVs shaking on their stands. But that's not where the good looks end. A stylish design frames this set's screen, but the screen itself is a bit too shiny and reflective.
9. Sony Handycam HDR-CX7 I Want It!
Sleek, small, and high-def: for an AVCHD camcorder, the CX7 produces very nice video, and will likely blow your socks off if you're used to a standard-definition camcorder. With street prices around $1,000 you'll pay a premium for the pleasure, but the convenience of recording to a Memory Stick Duo may win your heart. Editing the video isn't quite as enjoyable, however; check our ongoing coverage of AVCHD software support before you make the commitment.
10. Shure SE110 Sound Isolating Earphones with video I Want It!
Looking to upgrade those standard-issue, generic earbuds that came with your MP3 player? Shure's SE110s offer high-end sound and durable construction at a reasonable price. For around $100, these buds deliver some serious bass while blocking out background noise. If you're not willing to fork over quite that much for a pair of earbuds, V-Moda's $40 Bass Freqs have some booming bass, too.
