Asterisms, Constellations and Zodiac Gifts

In contrast to official constellations are asterisms composed of mostly simple shapes and fewer stars. Asterisms can be part of one or more constellation.

The graphic to the left shows the winter hexagon asterism which is part of six different constellations. Beginning top right and clockwise around the hexagon the stars are Capella (Alpha Aurigae), Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri), Rigel "left foot" (Beta Orionis), Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris), Procyon (Alpha Canis Minoris), Pollux (Beta Geminorum) and Castor (Alpha Geminorum).
