What Is Asthma?

Asthma is a disease of the lungs that causes obstruction of the airways. When an asthma attack occurs, the muscles that surround the bronchi constrict and have spasms which can inhibit the outward passage of air. The feeling of an asthma attack has been described as feeling as if you are starving for air, or like you are a fish out of water trying to breath.

Asthma Symptoms 

The most common symptoms of asthma are:

  • Coughing

  • Wheezing

  • A shortness of breath

  • Tightness of chest

  • Difficulty in breathing

Types of Asthma 

Extrinsic and Intrinsic Asthma

Asthma has generally been divided into two categories, extrinsic, and intrinsic. Extrinsic is also called atopic and is generally considered an allergy related condition with an increase in the serum immunoglobulin IgE. Intrinsic asthma is more associated with a bronchial reaction that is caused by factors such as cold air, exercise, chemicals, infection, and emotions.
