Aston Martin: Power, Beauty and Soul

Aston Martin sport sedans and coupes remain eye-turners. Perhaps that's because they have managed to stay distinctive in the face of a world changing around them. This isn't to say they haven't adapted--in fact new Aston Martins are as luxurious and as fast as almost any car on the market. Rather their sterling reputation is due to their almost century-long dedication to style, engineering, and performance.

Lionel Martin, the founder, termed it 'fast touring.' He was a fan of motor racing in the 1910s, back when automobiles were still a novelty for most of the world. He envisioned a market for other like-minded drivers, and set out to create cars that consumers could push to the limit safely. That mindset remains today in every sport car they make.Of all their vehicles, those with the highest resale values include the Aston Martin DB9, DB7, Aston Martin V8, and Aston Martin Vanquish. The DB7 and DB9 are the most famous, on account of their unmistakable power and feel. The V8 increases the engine size with impressive results. The Vanquish is available in a V12, which takes performance to a whole new level. There's something about the British engineering that makes them irresistible to the eye (and the right foot).

Because of voluntary limits placed on production, Aston Martins would be considered rare by today's mass-production standards. This has only increased resale values and made used Aston Martin vehicles even more desirable.

This book chronicles all models produced from about 1986 to 2006, with the greatest focus on the hand crafted V-series cars of 1990-2000 (Virage and all its decedents). In many ways the book shows how the company has made the transition from a ultra-low volume maker of coach built cars into a maker of expensive semi-mass produced sports cars (like an English Ferrari). Personally I have mixed feelings about this transformation, but the book does a magnificent job paying homage to both eras.

Aston Martins in film and culture

  • Author Ian Fleming gave his James Bond hero a DB III in the seventh novel, Goldfinger. A long association between 007 and the marque began on screen with the silver DB5 that appears in Goldfinger (1964) and Thunderball (1965). This was James Bond's company car, and in GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) appeared to have become his private car. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) a metallic-green DBS appears at the beginning and end of the movie. After an interlude with Lotus, Aston Martins were again used: a charcoal-grey V8 Volante and Vantage in The Living Daylights (1987). After switching to BMW for several films, the Vanquish appeared in Die Another Day (2002). In Casino Royale (2006), James Bond drives both the classic DB5 which becomes his personal vehicle after winning a poker game, and the new DBS which is revealed to be his new company car in Quantum of Solace (2008).

  • Tippi Hedren's character in the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds drove a silver Aston Martin DB2/4 drophead coupe (convertible).[29]

  • A silver/grey convertible DB4 was driven by Michael Caine's character in the original 1969 version of The Italian Job.

  • A Bahama Yellow Aston Martin DBS is driven by Sir Roger Moore in the 1971 TV series The Persuaders!. A DBS V8 was to be used in the series, however no V8 car was ready, so a six-cylinder DBS was modified to look like a V8 for use in the show.

  • A DBS and V8 Vantage Roadster is featured in the Aston Martin Music (2010) music video, which was produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. The song was recorded by rapper Rick Ross and featured rapper Drake and singer Chrisette Michele.

  • The V12 Vanquish is also featured in Breaking Dawn novel from the successful Twilight Saga franchise written by Stephenie Meyer.
