Never fear Astro Boy is Here

Once upon a time ...

IT ALL BEGINS IN the year 2003,

Professor Tenna creates a robot to replace his late son, Toio, hoping that their family life would resume as normal. However, the substitution does not live like any ordinary child (since he is a robot); Tenna, who is extremely saddened by this fact, sells the substitution robot to a local circus. As a performer at this circus, this robot is recognized as ASTROBOY.

Later, ASTROBOY is rescued from the circus by professor Ochanomizu (who is the head of science department); and under the guildance of Ochanomizu, ASTROBOY's adventure begins from here ...

He is flying high in the sky.

AstroBoy in Wikipedia

is a Japanese manga series first published in 1952 and television program first broadcast in Japan in 1963. The story follows the adventures of a fictional robot named Astro Boy and a selection of other characters along the way.

Astro Boy is the first Japanese television series that embodied the aesthetic that later became familiar worldwide as anime. It originated as a manga in 1952 by Osamu Tezuka, revered in Japan as the "God of Manga." After enjoying success abroad, Astro Boy was remade in the 1980s as Shin Tetsuwan Atomu, known as Astroboy in the United States and other Western countries, and again in 2003. In November 2007, he was named Japan's envoy for overseas safety. An American computer-animated 3-D film based on the original manga series by Tezuka was released on October 23, 2009.

ASTROBOY'S THEME SONG

There you go Astro-boy
On your flight into space.
Rocket high,
Through the sky,
More adventures to do all day.

As-tro-boy bombs away,
On your mission today.
There's a count-down,
And a blast-off.
Everyday is go Astro-boy!

As-tro-boy as you fly,
Strange new worlds you will spy.
Atom-celled,
Jet propelled,
Fighting monsters high in the sky.

As-tro-boy there you go,
Will you fight friend or foe,
Cosmic Ranger,
Laugh at Danger,
Everday is go Astro-boy!

Crowd will cheer you,
You're a hero,
As you go, go, GO ASTRO BOY!!!

The voice of Astroboy and Astrogirl was Billie Lou Watt (who was female, not male as many people believe). She later went on to be Kimba and Jimmy Sparks from Gigantor. The voice of Dr Elefun was Cliff Owen who also played Inspector Blooper from Gigantor and Dan'l Baboon from Kimba. Gilbert Mack was the voice of Mr. Pompus as well as Dick Strong from Gigantor and Pauley Cracker from Kimba.

Peter Fernandez wrote more than half of the English scripts and many others were written by the voice cast members. Peter was paid $100 to $125 per episode- the same fee that he was later paid by Fred Ladd for Gigantor. Fred Ladd directed the English version and wrote some of the scripts. Ladd said that "Astro Boy began with Mushi's #1, and generally stayed in Mushi's sequence, but we had to reject 6 of their shows, for various reasons: one dealt with vivisection (unacceptable here as kids' content at the time); one dealt with a bachelor who had pictures of nude women hanging on his walls; one (Christ's Eyeballs) dealt with a criminal hiding out in a church and scratching a secret message to his cohorts on the eyeballs of a statuette of Christ, (in Buddhist Japan, nobody at the studio objected)."

In 1982 a colored version was released and shown in Melbourne throughout the 1980's. In 1996 it was shown here on cable TV. Many of these episodes are available on video in Pal format through Siren Entertainment and are still enjoyed by young children today.

Alvin & Theodore

students

Alvin is one of Astro's classmates. He is a somewhat goofy character and he can be a bit of a bully at times. Initially, Alvin didn't like Astro because he was a robot, but gradually they became friends.

Another of Astro's classmates, Theodoore is Alvins "Sidekick". He is the typical brainiac, complete with huge glasses and weedy build. He always wears a sky-blue sweater with a big "T" on it.

Astro Boy

Billie Lou Watt

Astroboy was created by robotics genius Dr. Boynton in the likeness of his son Toby who was killed in a car accident. With seven different powers and a strong sense of justice, Astro defends society from threats posed by human, robot and even alien villains.

Astroboy's parents were created for him by Dr. Elephun. "Father" is a rather clumsy and dim-witted character whereas "Mother" is the total opposite.

Astro Girl

Billie Lou Watt

Uran is Astro's little sister. She is very mischievous and tends to get into trouble all the time. Physically, she is almost as strong as Astro, but she cannot fly. She can be a real brat at times but the bond between Uran and Astro is strong. Each has demonstrated that they are willing to sacrifice themselves for the other's safety. Uran was known as "Astrogirl" in the original black and white series.

Atlas

Atlas is one of Astroboy's greatest foes. Originally, Atlas was a boy robot like Astro, in fact he and Astro had identical abilities. He was used by Skunk to commit crimes and had faced off with Astro a number of times before he was destroyed. Atlas was rebuilt in his adult form as a highly advanced robot with the capacity to think like a human, thanks to the "Omega Factor" installed in him. The Omega Factor allows Atlas to be capable of great evil, but also gives him a conscience. He is bent on revenge against humans for the way they treat robots.

Atlas lives with his love, Livian, in a giant crystal shard called "The Crystal Castle". The castle is not only his home but also a powerful fortress with tremendous destructive abilities. Atlas' weapon of choice is a Lightning Saber, which he wields with deadly accuracy. It was later revealed that an evil scientist stole Astroboy's blueprints and used them as a mold for creating Atlas, making Atlas and Astro brothers.

Daddy Walrus

Gilbert Mack

Albert Duncan is his real name, but everyone calls him Daddy Walrus (probably because of his walrus-like mustache). He has a short temper, but a great sense of adventure. He is a close friend of Dr. Elephun and of Astro. Daddy Walrus is a strong advocate of robot rights, and always makes sure his opinion is heard. He has accompanied Astro on many adventures, and he is one of the funniest characters on the show.

Dr. Packadermus J. Elefun

Ray Owens / Cliff Owen

Dr. Packadermus became the Head of The Ministry of Science after the disappearance Dr Boynton. Dr Elephun is also responsible for creating Astro's robot parents and his little sister Uran. He always keeps a close watch on Astro and gives him guidance when he needs it.

Jump

Jump was Toby Boynton's dog before Toby died. When Astro was created, Jump knew that he wasn't Toby and didn't like him very much. Whenever Astro came near him, he would growl menacingly. In time, Jump learned to like Astro and his family, even Uran, and became part of Astro's household.

Livian

Livian is Atlas' companion and soul mate. She has an angelic and very compassionate nature. Livian disapproves of Atlas' evil doings and has, on a few occasions, risked her life to bring Astro news of his brother's evil intent. Although Atlas' plans have been foiled many times due to Livian's interference, he has never hurt her, physically or otherwise. She is the one who eventually convinced Atlas to side with Astro in defending the Earth against a hoarde of alien invaders.

Nikki

"I love you Astro"

Nikki was Astro's first love. Plans for a robot bomb weapon were stolen and Astro was sent to get it back. While on the enemy base, he met Nikki. They fell in love with each other.

Later on, the mad doctor who stole the plans revealed that the robot bomb has been created, and that Nikki was the bomb. Astro defeated the scientist, but the bomb in Nikki was activated. This left Astro worried, so he asked the mad scientist to help Nikki.

Disassembling her piece by piece was the only way to save her, and unfortunately the plans were destroyed so they she cannot be put her back together. They disassembled her just in time, but Astro was devastated over the lost of his love. The only full part of Niki which was left were her feet. Astro asks Doctor Elefun to replace his feet with Nikki's feet. Doctor Elefun agrees, and now Nikki will always be a part of Astro.

Skunk

An escaped criminal mastermind (with unusually pale blue skin), Skunk has but two main agendas: getting rich quick and getting even with Astroboy. He is bent on revenge against Astro for foiling his schemes so many times.

Theodore & Alvin

Astro Boy Collection Box Set (1980) (2003)

Although Osamu Tezuka's Complete Manga runs to 300 volumes and his filmography as a writer, producer, and/or director includes more than 70 shorts, features, and TV series, Astro Boy--including this 1980 remake--remains his iconic creation. Tezuka wrote many of the scripts for the second version, and he and Noboru Ishiguro are listed as co-directors.

Created by Dr. Boynton to replace his dead son, Astro is a 100,000-horsepower super-robot with jets in his legs, lasers in his fingers, and a gun in his derrire. His round head and goo-goo eyes reflect Tezuka's affection for the old Fleischers cartoons. Astro overcomes criminals, people who use robots for evil purposes or who harbor anti-robot prejudice, and Atlas, a robot who wants to rule the world. In these struggles, Astro never loses his temper, holds a grudge, or feels temptation. Tezuka wanted him to embody the virtues of selflessness and compassion, but his naive, unflagging goodness makes him a rather dull character.

The color version of Astro Boy is better animated than the 1963 original, which relied heavily on cycles and reused footage. But the stolid timing robs the action scenes of the punch they should pack. The English dub is equally flat, with little inflection or acting to communicate the characters' emotions. The faded prints have been restored to their original colors. Characters are called by their English names in the dialogue but by their Japanese names in subtitles (e.g., Dr. Boynton becomes Dr. Tenma).

Among the extras are several deleted scenes, including one of Tezuka introducing "Astro's First Love." Tezuka devotees and fans who grew up watching the color version on TV will want this set, but the original, black-and-white series remains the definitive Astro Boy.

Astro Boy - The Complete Series (2004)

When Osamu Tezuka created Tetsuwan Atom (literally Iron-arm Atom) a.k.a. Astro Boy, he set his birthdate as April 7, 2003--51 years after the initial manga and 40 years after the groundbreaking television series debuted. Sony produced this third incarnation in 2003, and a few episodes aired on American TV in 2004.

A combination of drawn and computer-generated animation, the new version is far more lavish than the initial black-and-white series or the 1980 color remake. The artists strive to preserve Tezuka's drawing style, keeping Astro's outsized eyes and Dr. O'Shay's pickle nose. Spaceships and other robots float effortlessly by, but Astro's legs shoot old-fashioned rocket flairs.

The newly born Astro is a complete innocent, but as he explores various aspects of the world, he develops a strong sense of purpose, aiding those in need. His state-of-the-art brain includes kokoro, which can be translated as "heart," "spirit," or "will," which makes him more human.

The conflict between humans and robots -- which some critics have interpreted as a metaphor for racism distinguishes -- escalates into a battle at the city of Robotonia in Antarctica. Astro strives to make peace between the hostile factions, although many of the conflicts were sparked by Dr. Tenma, who originally created him. Although visually appealing, this lush reinterpretation lacks the gritty charm of Tezuka's low-budget original. The only extra is a short "remaking of"; the dialogue is dubbed in English, Spanish, and Portuguese--but not Japanese. (Unrated, suitable for ages 8 and older: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

(From the Back Cover)

Filled with exciting action, humor, and drama, "Astro Boy" tells the story of a young robot boy modeled after the son of a research scientist. This atomic-powered robot becomes a reluctant superhero who fights for justice and peace--for humans and robots alike.

Astro Boy - Ultra Collector's Edition DVD Set 1

Astro Boy was not the first Japanese animated series, as some fans have claimed, but it was the first with an ongoing storyline--and the first to air in the U.S. Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989) began Tetsuwan Atom (literally "Iron-arm Atom") as a manga in 1952, then adapted it to a TV series that debuted in January 1963. NBC Films bought the rights to about half of the 193 episodes and edited them for American viewers. Astro Boy premiered in the U.S. in September 1963, and ran on local stations through 1972.

The story is well-known to anime fans: After the death of his son Astor (Tobio in Japanese), Dr. Boyton (Dr. Tenma) builds a 100,000-horsepower super-robot to replace him. But a robot can never grow and truly replace Astor, so the scientist sells him to a cruel circus owner. Dr. Packadermus J. Elefun (Dr. Ochanomizu) rescues Astro and helps him become a fighter against crime and injustice.

The original English-language masters were destroyed in 1975, when Tezuka's Mushi Productions went bankrupt. For the Ultra Collector's Edition, Right Stuf tracked down the best surviving voice elements and combined them with video from the original Japanese negatives. Not surprisingly, the sound quality varies on the discs, but barring the discovery of additional material in some forgotten vault, this is the closest to a definitive Astro Boy English speakers will see.

Tezuka wrote some of the scripts and co-directed the 1980 remake (Astro Boy Collection Box Set); the 2003 incarnation combined drawn and CG animation (Astro Boy: The Complete Series). But the stiff, black-and-white original remains the truest version of Tezuka's watershed creation.

Extras include: the first part of an interview with producer Fred Ladd; two episodes in Japanese with subtitles; small galleries of character art and merchandise; "The History of Astro Boy" in booklet form; and a biography of Tezuka.

104 redubbed TV episodes

in the US 1963 - 1964

Astroboy was called Tetsuwan Atom in Japan. The black and white series was created, animated and produced by Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989) through his own company named Mushi Productions. Tezuka, like his father, was a qualified doctor of medicine but was more interested in drawing.

Astroboy was a successful comic strip in Japan in the 1950's. It was released in Japan between 1963 and 1966 and was shown on Melbourne TV in April 1966 at 5:30pm Sunday's on channel 0.

TV week described it as "Cartoon adventure series about a youngster in the 21st century." It was the first animated TV series to be produced in Japan, and after becoming a worldwide hit, Japanese cartoons began to flood the market with the release of other successful series' such as Gigantor, 8th man and Prince Planet.

The large oval eyes became the standard for most other Japanese cartoons. A total of 193 episodes were produced, but only 104 of them were redubbed and shown on TV outside Japan.

JAP-ANime

Astro Boy is the pioneer of Japanese anime. Since the 1950's, this cute, yet powerful, super-heroic robot has delighted fans around the world. Although Astro Boy remained calm for many years, he has recently made a comeback; especially on TV.

The pioneering genius of Japan's "God of Comics," Osamu Tezuka is highlighted by his life's masterwork: Tetsuwan Atomu, also known as Mighty Atom or Astro Boy -- a comic series featuring a cute little android who yearns to be more human.

The history of Tetsuwan Atomu and Tezuka's role in it is a road map to understanding the development of new media in Japan and the United States, the connection between fantasy robots and technology, and Astro Boy's cultural impact.

some interesting points after watching Astroboy episodes again after nearly 30 years

In the episode "Mission to the Middle of the World", Astroboy, Astrogirl and the journalist traveling with them come across an underground race, descended survivors of Atlantis, who appear to call themselves "deros".

This got my memory working, and I did a little research. Back in the mid-1940s, "Amazing Stories", the pulp SF magazine (the very first, dating form 1926, and about to be revived after a few years of non-publication) published a lot of stories by a guy called Richard S Shaver. They weren't very well written, but they got a lot of attention - and generated a lot of controversy in the SF community - because Shaver claimed that they were all based on truth!

He claimed that degenerate races, living inside the earth, and called "deros" were controlling the direction of mankind on the surface. These races were using technology left behind by ancient races like the "Atlantans". As I said Shaver claimed that all of this was true! He seems to have genuinely believed it, and today would probably be writing UFO cult-type books (and probably making a fortune in the process!). Although his stuff boosted the sales of Amazing Stories for a while (Although Shaver was a real person, many theorized that most of the stories were actually written by Amazing's editor, Raymond Palmer), the fans decried it as being hogwash, and it lead to great controversy.

Eventually publication of this "Shaver Mystery" material, as it came to be known, was dropped, and the whole matter became a footnote in the history of science fiction. Until, of course, I saw this episode, with its reference to subterranean "deros". It seems hard to believe that it was a coincidence; perhaps one of the people writing the English language scripts had read Shaver material as a youth, and decided to put the reference in as an in-joke? We'll never know, but I thought it an interesting little quirk.

I also took a quick look at the live action Astroboy film. Well! Could this actually be the Japanese equivalent of "Plan 9 From Outer Space"? Perhaps somewhere in Japan, there's a former child actor who looks back on this movie as the crowning achievement of his career. Mind you, that outfit he had to wear surely qualifies as some sort of child abuse! And what about those villains with the top hats and big "Z"s on their front?! Amazing - truly amazing! I wonder what poor old Tezuka thought of it?

2003 version

A 2003 version of Astro Boy was created to celebrate Astro Boy's birth and the 40th Anniversary of the original 1963 series.

In a future where technology has advanced to its peak and robots serve all of humanity, robot scientist Dr. Tenma created a powerful robot modeled after his deceased son Tobio. However, Tenma mysteriously disappears and abandons his creation.

The robot is eventually found, and by a kindly Robot Ministry scientist named Dr. O'Shay. Reborn and given a new life as under the name Astro Boy, he quickly learns about life and the world around him. Astro is given "Kokoro," which makes him stand out from most robots by enabling him to have emotions and learn and grow just like any human being. Realizing his true goal to bring peace to both humans and robots, he uses his special powers and abilities to bring peaceful solutions to human and robot conflicts.

However, his mysterious past and origins catch up with him, and Dr. Tenma returns with sinister purposes for his creation. Soon, Astro Boy is caught in a struggle between humanity and robot kind, and he will soon discover his destiny to ultimately bring peace to a world where humanity and robots move closer everyday to a violent confrontation. What are Tenma's true motives? And will humans and robots ever be able to coexist in peace?

The series begins in the year 2000 with the death of Dr Boynton's (a robotics engineer) son Astor (Toby in the first remake) in a car accident (help with some character names from Dave Sternberg). He makes a robot in his son's image, but disappointed that he's not a real boy he disowns him, and he is sold to a robot circus and here is named Astroboy. The ringmaster Cachatore (Hamegg in the new series) treats him cruelly, but he is later rescued by Dr. Elefun (large nose and two puffs of hair on the sides of his head) who is against slavery of robots. Under his guidance, Astroboy embarks on adventures, fighting anything that threatens mankind.

Astroboy can fly using jet rocket propulsion; has weapons including a lazer and machine gun, and has emotions. Astroboy, like most of the other robots, lives by the robot law that orders robots to help mankind by doing what's good.

Other characters in the series included Mr. Pompus who was a friend of Dr. Elefun's (renamed Daddy Walrus in the colored series because of his long moustache), Astrogirl (named Uran in the color series) made by Dr. Elefun as Astroboy sister. Astroboy bigger brother was named Jetto. He was stored away in the warehouse of the Science Academy and was created by Dr. Boynton as a prototype of Astroboy. One of Astroboy's main enemies is Atlas who was a boy robot but was rebuilt into a highly intelligent and powerful robot.

Daddy Walrus is sometimes a secret agent and in some episodes is also Judo Expert (as this fact is demonstrated in the Blackie Young episode). He retains the boastful loudmouth qualities of Mr. Pompus but actually is portayed in the new series as a courageous individual as opposed to a cowardly braggard in the older Astroboy series. The Dr. Elefun character in the New Astroboy is a somewhat less of a scholar and actually more of a foolish "Absent Minded professor", rather than the learned man that we see heading up "The Institute of Science". (Info on Daddy Walrus from Dave Sternberg)

Some of the episodes include "Funnel To The Future" where Astroboy, Astrogirl and Dr. Elefun are sent 70,000 years into the future; "Mystery Of The Metal Men" where Astroboy is blown away into a parallel world, and "Gangor The Monster" where 46 wrestling robots join together to form a giant centipede. The lost episode, titled "The Beast from 20 Fathoms", was created in 1963, and only two copies were made. The Japanese version was destroyed as Osamu Tezuka was unhappy with it. The other copy was sent to America for dubbing and is the only version that exists today.
