Astronomy with two eyes
Astronomical Binoculars give a three dimensional view of heavenly bodies. Describing the image as good or better than telescopes can be misleading. However, having binocular vision gives a better sense of dimension which is hard to achieve in other ways. Astronomy binoculars are also easier to handle without a tripod. You can get great images with hand held models. Greater magnifications like a 10x will still be better with tripods if you want to prevent the dreaded "visual shake"
Nikon Action 7x50 Binocular
I think of the Nikon Action as the starter Astronomical binocular. It's fairly light, inexpensive and the rubber armor should be enough protection from minor bumps. This should make for good practice until you become proficient at using binoculars for skywatching.

Orion 10x50 Resolux Waterproof Astronomy Binoculars
If your observation sites have a lot of bodies of water nearby, you might want to consider this waterproof model. Dropping regular binoculars in the water can have disastrous consequences. The Orion eliminates that problem. It will stand immersions for a short time, certainly enough time to fish it out.
