@america: Branding America
It is not just business that scramble for every possible opportunity to project their brand. Vision obsessed Governments just can't help themselves as their messianic histories push them to the conclusion that "to know us is to love us". The United States has now opened its first center @america in the continuing effort to win the hearts and minds of the world's youth. They have chosen a highly strategic area, too. Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country. @america opened its first center in Jakarta and because they are targeting the young affluents, they have situated this one right in one of Jakarta's top-end shopping malls, the Pacific Place. Jakarta is capital to Indonesia, Southeast Asia's fastest growing economy with the greatest number of social media such as Twitter and Facebook users. Commendable strategy. It sees that it needs to try to offset the images of oppression and hatred for Islam projected by some Imams with a more positive and progressive vision.
Kudos to some creative thinking and social media savvy embassy officials who thought of doing this. I remembered in the past how as a growing kid in Asia, the American Cultural Center or the United States Information Center (USIS) was our frequent destination when we had to do serious research or just get hold of books or glance through some of the foreign newspapers we could not get hold of there. We, of course, threw slogans at it when as university students, we were in the streets to demonstrate against imperialism. Yet, it did help us in many ways advance our knowledge. And it did create a feeling of interest in us having information and not just agitprop or "the Government Line". But many of these centers all over the world are gone now. With the internet world and travel becoming easier and affordable to many, the need changed as budgets shrank. And, maybe, America became a little less sure of its image as a warm fuzzy Uncle to emerging nations who defined image by actions rather than advertising.
Still, America or the United States in this case (remember, Canada and Mexico are "America" too) or at least the Clinton driven State department, feels the need to reach out again with a softer cultural image to engage especially the young in an activity more creative than flag burning and more linked to the common interests of the young. American songs, fashions, movies and videos, status products (Coke etc.) toys and success images are solid raw material. But they need to be gently woven into a fabric displaying the creative culture that generated them. They want to shift the image especially in many Islamic countries, from the Great Satan to one of a gentler, more creative, more change committed nation who can talk to the world without a gun. Many of these younger generation have a fear for America eventhough they dream of studying in its universities. 9-11 has created that divide and has made studying in the U.S. more difficult for Islamic students as American politicians fed the paranoia of isolation and protection. So, is this the U.S. reaching out to Islam or just a logical promotional step in a world that has become social media savy?
Whatever it is, it looks like the young of Jakarta have taken to this first center. It is now on facebook and its friends increasing. In fact, the number of Indonesians that have now become "friends" of the U.S. embassy in Jakarta after the center's opening in December 2010 continues to climb.

Get yourself an i-pad
There is nothing like the i-pad for now especially if you want several apps to run simultaneously and the ease to move from one to the other. Whatever the other e-tablets offer, there is yet one to beat the i-pad in ease of use. This, I got from someone who develops apps for Android.

The author couldn't have time this book better. Timing is everything. Today's world calls for cultural diplomacy as in spite of claims of the world getting smaller, the cultural differences that are only ittitants at a distance, contribute to hostility and conflict when we live with them on media and manipulated journalism. More than ever, there is a need to understand cultural diplomacy and invest in it. to move beyond the differences we have as wthnic groups to the common interests and joys we share as humans.

The @america Center in Jakarta
The Pacific Place

What is the fastest way to draw in groups of SMS-ing, Twittering, Facebooking kids. With several Apple i-Pads just lying around to try out, the magnet is huge. Big wall screens with constantly changing content also attract the mall crowd. The interactive monitors engage many students as they get responses to questions about the US and news items. This new interactive center in Jakarta is the US first attempt at a Center which can attract the young of the digital age to know America better and maybe have a more positive image of the US.
With a highly interactive facility in a place where the young gather, displaying the latest technologies such as Google Earth's Liquid Galaxy and interactive monitors, the Center tries to bring in as many people as possible. It even buses students from high schools outside of Jakarta who have a good experience learning about the US, as often their favourite music and media creatures, crazy styles and future schools are there. Many truly appreciate what they have learned. Do they all leave loving the Stars and Stripes. Definitely not. But the image is shifted just a bit and the passive acceptance of rote hatred becomes less likely
The center employs knowledgeable and engaging e-guides to ease visitors into the interactive experience. So, just go in and let yourself be guided. The center's location can discourage many from the lower bracket of society as this is in an upscale mall where security is not very welcoming. This heavy security including body search can be unnerving. Still, this can't be helped for now.

With the first cultural center in Indonesia, you can only understand its impact when you take this within the context of US-Indonesia relations.
Positive Effect on Perception of the US?
What do you think?
The embassy officials hope that the more that the Twittering generation of Indonesians know about the United States in an interactive way, the more they will get to have a more positive view. Others, think that Indonesians are a bit wary about the United States and its attempts to dialogue with them. So the cultural approach is a soft option in a world where religious extremists compete with the mainstream rational Islam for the next generation's bodies and minds.
Do you think the @america center will create a positive perception of the United States?

Yes, from what they will learn about the United States
No, they will become more negative about the US

The Challenge to the @america center
The first center in Jakarta

Being the first such Centre, this will be closely observed. If it succeeds in Jakarta, this can be tried in many other places. The security challenge will always be there as the US will always be a target, real and imagined.
As this is an attempt at cultural diplomacy, the other challenge is the inherent conflict in differences between cultures. Comments about culture often hit hard and the hope is this will bridge the gap, especially for the young affluent generation who will be tomorrows leaders. Could it backfire? Yes, if the theme gets twisted into propaganda and forgets its soft mission and fun programming. Many parents and schools are intolerant of social media but here's a Government that promotes it! An interesting message to the young.

- Thank you for highlighting Homeless In America and Hungry In America. Indeed, media spin can make one think that we all have our lives in order. But, there is no Utopia. Wherever in the world that there are people, there are struggles. Mental illness and poverty know no bounds and are the hardest to treat or conquer.

- A very intelligent commentary and the strategy of US government. Even with that, I feel that US has been instrumental in opening horizons of opportunities to young minds and scientists around the world. People still look forward to US and the country leads in advance technology and the best of institutions. A global world free of prejudices need enforcement and freedom of expression. I wish more visionary countries come forward and dissolve the boundaries.
A beautifully written lens highlighting the subject and the theme.Thumbs up.
