Atalaya Castle

Ranked #1,579 in Travel & Places, #59,017 overall

Welcome to Atalaya Castle!

Atalaya Castle is located in Murrells Inlet, SC inside Huntington Beach State Park. This interesting site is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Atalaya covers nearly an acre of land, and was built without formal plans. The plans were created by Archer Huntington "in his head" and were based on Moorish architecture. No visit to Murrells Inlet is complete without a visit to this wonderful beach and a tour of the castle. Atalaya is handicapped accessible for the physically impaired.

Things to see and do at Atalaya

type=text*Tour the Castle! - For a mere $1 admission fee, you can tour the castle of Atalaya on your own and at your own pace. Receive a map at the entrance that contains the floorplan of the castle and grounds so you know exactly what you are seeing. The laminated map must be returned when you are through touring the castle. You may also download a copy of the map if you prefer. The admission fee covers admission to the castle for the entire day. You may leave for a picnic lunch or a romp in the ocean if you wish, and return any time before 5pm for another stroll around the castle and grounds. See how the experience changes with the different lights of the morning, afternoon, and evening!

*Guided Tours - A docent from Friends of Huntington Beach can guide you on a tour of Atalaya Castle and provide a wealth of knowledge about the castle and the lives of the Huntingtons. The guided tour is free with the $1 admission fee. For an extra special treat, try the Ghost Tour!

*Arts and Crafts Festival - This annual event, now in its 35th year in 2010, is known as one of the best art events in the Southeast. It is a juried event featuring over a hundred local and national artists. The 30 rooms of the castle as well as the courtyards make up the site of this fun event. The festival takes place in late September, and includes live entertainment and great food.

*Weddings - Your wedding will be a spectacular event if you are lucky enough to reserve Atalaya Castle for your big day! You'll be able to use the grassy inner courtyards, both the indoor and outdoor studios where Anna Hyatt Huntington created her works, and the small courtyard that was originally used as a laundry drying yard. You may visit these links for more information on reserving Atalaya Castle for your wedding. This location makes for some very stunning wedding photos! You can get castle photos and stroll down to the beach for even more gorgeous shots.
