It is known that many doctors believed that a low-carb diet like Dr. Atkins' can increase the risks of cancer , diabetes, hearth disease and other diseases, there have been some studies that have actually proven the opposite to be true. One of the factors that has been looked at in these studies is the relation between the Atkins diet and cholesterol levels.In fact, the opposite has found to be the case in some of the studies regarding the Atkins diet , diabetes and cholesterol.Many people who have participated in the Atkins diet program have in reality seen a reduction in triglycerides, a rise in HDL , and an improving ratio between the HDL's and the LDL's ("bad" cholesterol). These encouraging results indicate that those on the Atkins diet with cholesterol problems may have found a way to adjust cholesterol levels naturally without the help of drugs or other types of therapy. This is great for those who have lost extra pounds on the Atkins diet program.
Why does the Atkins Diet Lower Cholesterol?
When we thing about the core value of the diet and the base of the food pyramid, the Atkins diet is absolutely a hi cholesterol diet. However, as a short-term plan it does not increase cholesterol levels; instead it brings up the amount of "good" cholesterol in the body and corrects the ratio of HDL to LDL. As a long-term diet though, the Atkins plan can have a certain amount of contradicted effects like increasing heart problems.

Very nice. You didn't answer why Atkins improves cholesterol. I think that is partly because we don't really know. I look at it like this: they used to think milk caused kidney stones that are made of calcium. Now they are finding out calcium is good for them. Kind of like how if you are never exposed to germs you are more likely to get sick. Our body isn't as sensitive towards things like cholesterol if we eat it, maybe?
