The South Beach diet has been developed by a cardiologist as an alternative to low carb diet foods. It replaces 'bad carbohydrates and fats' with 'good carbohydrates and fats'.

This diet is based on the principle that hunger pangs are created by foods that are not just carbohydrate rich but also get digested very fast, raising the blood sugar level. Dieters are suggested foods like vegetables, beans and whole grains instead, which get digested relatively slowly.

The South Beach diet basically shuns trans fats and reduces saturated fats, which cause LDL cholesterol and consequently heart disease. Instead, it recommends unsaturated fats and Omega-3 fatty acids that raise HDL or good cholesterol from foods like nuts, oily fish and lean meats.

This diet has 3 phases - phase 1 eliminates all sugars and carbs including fruits and lasts 2 weeks; it causes considerable weight loss.

Phase 2 brings in fruits and vegetables; it can be continued till the dieter wishes to loose weight.

Phase 3 is the maintenance phase for life where there are no prohibitions; the dieter is expected to be diet conscious and stick to a balanced food plan.

    This is a really good low carb resource. I have been on adkins for a few months now and have lost over 60 lbs. You lose weight fast, but you feel great and are never hungry. I would recommend the adkins diet to anyone who has weight to lose. It is only natural.
