Seeing Atlanta as a Child
I have lived in Atlanta for 9 years now. My kids are 3 and 1. I've been to many of the local attractions with and without my kids. This is my review of some of the favorite sites for locals and visitors alike.

Imagine It!: Children's Museum of Atlanta
Pros: There is a separate section for kids 4 and younger. Within that area is another section only for kids 2 and younger. The museum has trains, painting and pretend play areas, as well as other activities. You can bring in your own food. The museum is close to Centennial Olmpic Park, CNN, Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola.
Cons: You have ot pay for parking. You have to pay admission for anyone 2 or older. The 4 and under section has a fishing pool with rain jackets, but staying dry is challenging. Most of the activities are geared toward kids 3 or older. Schools do take students here for field trips. There are limited food choices in the museum.
You Should Go: If you need a child freindly site, if you want an affordable attraction to visit.
You Shouldn't Go: If you don't want to fight the crowd from field trips.
Six Flags White Water
Pros: This park provides a whole day of fun. There is a kiddie pool area. There are rides for daredevils and the faint of heart. They give rain checks if the park has to close due to inclement weather. American Adventures is next door.
Cons: On the pricey side since it's part of Six Flags. The kiddie pool is the only place I remember seeing for small children (ones who can't yet swim). If school is out for the summer, this place is packed.
You Should Go: If you love water parks, if you have time to stay most of the day.
You Shouldn't Go: If you have really small children, if you can't stay and get your money's worth out of the ticket price.
Georgia Aquarium
Pros: You can see most of the displays in about 2 hours. There is only one way in and out, and it's not through the same door. You can park on the street if you are lucky to find a spot on a side street. It is pretty empty during the week except for the school field trip groups. The children's area is geared toward middle school children (based on height). The museum is close to Centennial Olmpic Park, CNN, World of Coca-Cola and Imagine It!: Children's Museum of Atlanta.
Cons: Very pricey to get in and to eat there. The only exit is through the gift shop. Parking in the deck close by was $10 in February 2008. The touch tanks aren't geared toward small children or short people. The children's area is geared toward middle school children (based on height).
You Should Go: If you love fish, if you have to see the killer whales or beluga whales, if this is another notch in your aquarium belt.
You Shouldn't Go: If you are on a tight budget, if you don't like middle school kids running around freely.
Books About Atlanta
World of Coca-Cola
Pros: The museum offers an interesting look at the history of Coca-Cola and all the memorabilia that goes with it. Fountains appear to shoot soda across the "shop" to fill your cup. You can sample different sodas from around the world. The museum is close to Centennial Olmpic Park, CNN, Georgia Aquarium and Imagine It!: Children's Museum of Atlanta.
Cons: It is pricey to visit the museum. All the soda tasting can leave you with a gurgling stomach.
You Should Go: If you love Coca-Cola, if you need to fill a morning or afternoon.
You Shouldn't Go: If you aren't a fan of soft drinks.
Zoo Atlanta
Kids love to look at animals! The Atlanta Zoo has pandas, elephants, a giraffe, zebra, lion, rhino, gorillas, reptile house and more.Pros: You can see all the animals in the zoo in about 2 hours. There are pandas which are a rare site at zoos. There is a petting zoo, carousel and train for all ages. There is a climbing wall that is appropriate for ages 5 and up. The restrooms by the petting zoo have child size toilets and sinks. There is a playground with slides, a "boat" and rocking animals that is for smaller children (height limit). The Cyclorama is next door if you want to visit it as well.
Cons: It is a bit pricey for what you get. The animals may be sleeping on the far side of their cage or gone to eat. A stroller is ideal for smaller children, but the you have to pick the kids up for a better view because of the railings. The train, carousel and climbing wall cost extra. The zoo is old and has no room to grow, so one visit every five years or more is plenty.
You Should Go: If you want a reasonably priced way to spend your morning or afternoon, if you want to see the pandas, if you want to add a notch to your zoo belt.
You Shouldn't Go: If you love the St. Louis Zoo or any that are as large as it.
