Atlantic Beach N.C. ~ My Dream
Ranked #10,014 in Travel & Places, #256,531 overall
Why Atlantic Beach North Carolina Is Special
The reasons that Atlantic Beach N.C. are special to me are as numerous as the grains of sand that line one one footprint on the beach. From the lack of one hotel after another lining the beachfront to the dunes that separate the beach from the non-assuming homes and rental condos, and from the relatively uncrowded sands to the few weather worn restaurants, Atlantic Beach is the perfect place to unwind for a few days or spend a lifetime.
The photo here was taken at sunrise while traveling over the Intercoastal Waterway into Atlantic Beach
Atlantic Beach N.C. Through The Lens Of A Flip Mino
This forty second clip was taken on a day that threatened rain and the surf was a bit rough, but that is one of the reasons I like the beach at Atlantic Beach. I find nothing as relaxing as laying and listening to the waves as they crash against the coast.
How many beaches do you know of that would be so lightly populated in mid-June, even with the threat of rain? Not many. Atlantic Beach is still largely a locals' beach, with an influx, on the weekends, of U.S. Marines from Cherry Point Air Station located twenty miles inland at Havelock North Carolina. Both commercial and pleasure fishing seem to be bigger industries than tourism in that region.
Don't get me wrong, the area that is steeped in over three centuries of exciting history, does get a good number of visitors. It's just that when I think of my trips to Myrtle Beach, Daytona Beach, The Gulf Coast, and others, I like the less dense crowd here.
The Flip Mino I have is a fairly new toy that is way beyond easy to operate, and fun to have around. The 1/2" x 2" x 4" of the video cam's profile is easy to keep in a pocket or even hide in my palm. There is a built in flip up USB male connector that will plug into any computer allowing for downloads and charging. There is no software disc as the video transfer program is built into the unit. The camera came with cables to hook it up directly to the television for playback. One of the coolest features is the fact that it will hold up to one hour of recorded video.
The fun I've had with this has been incredible, and it's going to get better as soon as my action mount arrives. The action mount will mount on the handlebars of the bike and I'll be able to make videos of some cool rides.
The only drawbacks are the zoom, which is only x2, and the fact that you can't disable the audio. Neither one are very much of a drawback as far as I'm concerned.
The Flip Video Cameras get two big thumbs up from me.

Atlantic Beach And The Crystal Coast
Atlantic Beach North Carolina is part of what is known as the Crystal Coast. The Crystal Coast includes Emerald Isle at it's southern most extreme and Fort Macon State Park, just to the north of Atlantic Beach. The whole area is considered to be the southern portion of the Outer Banks.
That area of the United States coastline is rich in nautical history, especially that which involves the piracy of three hundred years ago. Nefarious seafarers such as Blackbeard, Anne Bonney, Mary Read, and others plundered and made the waters of the Outer Banks their playgrounds. The waters of the area were hazards to any who dared apprehend the pirates.
Because of the swift flowing gulf currents that run north along the coast, many ships would try to knock time off their journey by hugging the coast. Many ship captains blundered their vessels to the shoals this way, thus giving birth to the area being called the Graveyard Of The Atlantic.
On the flip side of that coin, the Pamlico Sound leads deep inland to New Bern North Carolina, making the Sound a sought after refuge from rough Atlantic Ocean storms and New Bern a near perfect portage.
Atlantic Beach, as a resort area, wasn't even conceived until 1870 when a well known man of Morehead City began buying property out across the Intercoastal Waterway (then known as Money Bay). Appleton Oaksmith gave up on his dream out of devastating despair over the loss of four of his daughters in a horrific accident in 1879.
Two wealthy businessmen of the area picked Oaksmith's dream up and by 1887 the first public bath house was built . From there, over the years, the city has grown to be just as Oaksmith dreamed, a resort.
Atlantic Beach Today
Many rental condos and homes line the what are known as the Bogue Banks, but you won't see many tall hotels. There are plenty of public accesses to the beaches as well, accompanied by ample free parking.
Dining is as fun as it gets, featuring fresh seafood on many of the menus. Seafood netted in the waters of the area is the fare, and not once did I have anything that I wouldn't eat again. If seafood ain't your bag, there are plenty of other places that offer Asian to Italian. I'd suggest the China Garden And Mongolian Grill over in Morehead City at least one night of your stay. Reasonably priced and all you can eat.
Speaking of Morehead City, that's where I usually stay. All the rooms are clean and a darn sight cheaper than trying to rent something on the beach for a week. With all the free parking at the beach and less than a five minute drive from most places in Morehead City, the choice is a simple one for me. Not because I'm cheap, but because I don't plan my trips that far ahead and finding a place on the beach, no matter what beach, is a tall order on a short notice.
I don't go to the beach just to follow someone's daily plans, so condos don't really excite me, because renting one usually means a vacation with other folks. I go to the beach to de-evolve. Lose myself. The sound of the ocean washes away a lot of the grit that builds up on my soul.
Atlantic Beach is perfect for me to do that. Like I mentioned, the surf is a little rougher, but that makes for that awesome crashing sound. The waters are also shallow enough that once you get behind the breaking surf, the swimming is wonderful. Hey, another cool thing is that Atlantic Beach faces nearly due south, so that the sun runs along it all day.
I have a patio umbrella that was given to me by a beer distributor and it goes to the beach
with me. It's huge, it's vinyl, it's perfect. I can lay it down in the sand and it serves as a small shelter, so rain is no problem, nor is the searing sun on those days when the sun is overbearing.
It is my dream to live there.

Stuff You'll Want For The Beach
There are a few items you'll wish you had at the beach, and you can spend a good amount of time shopping for them while you're there.
Aside from sunscreen, one item I suggest is a beach umbrella or some kind of shelter to keep you out of the sun for part of the day.You won't want to plant that umbrella without an anchor, trust me. One exhausting chase of a bouncing umbrella down the beach and you'll be convinced. Man those things are fast.
Sand pails are handy little boogers. From getting water, to building castles, to carrying collectible shells you find on those long strolls, you really don't want to be without one of these utilitarian tools.
A mesh tote bag is a must too. The number of small items we can't live without is amazing, and the mesh bag will help keep them in one spot while allowing sand to pass through, not collecting over all precious sundries.
WARNING!
The best way to attract seagulls by the droves, is to hold that sandwich you're eating high in the sky. Before you know it, you'll have about half the species as your guests, and they'll be so happy to see you they will be in no hurry to leave.
On the other hand, if you really don't care for the extremely bothersome company of pesky gulls, then eat your food as discreetly as possible.
Atlantic Beach Restaurants ~ A Few I Recommend
If it's seafood you want, there's an abundance of it here in Atlantic Beach. All fresh, and most restaurants have a healthy offering of catches from local nets.
But, if you really aren't into seafood, don't despair! There is a great variety of cuisine to choose from, including the delicacies of most fast food chains.
I have never had a dinner Atlantic Beach that I didn't come away from praising the cook.
- Amos Mosquito's
Amos Mosquito's is a casual joint that is designed for fun. Offering Karaoke and a sushi bar on Thursdays and live music on Friday nights, this is a hoppin' place. But, don't forget that the food is incredible as well.
Get two orders of the homemade potato chips. You won't be sorry if you take one with you, that is if the second order even makes it out of the joint alive!- Crab's Claw
Oh man, the Crab's Claw owner really knows how to serve up a wonderful seafood dinner. On my last trip to Atlantic Beach, I had the Crab's Claw Caribbean style Grouper (their specialty is Caribbean style entres) and was begging for more of the melt in my mouth fish.
Plus, there is the beachfront view and elevated deck. The Crab's Claw is another favorite watering hole when the lights go down. Grab a wine glass or your favorite spirit and enjoy the ocean's night air from the deck
Outer Banks Restaurants ~ The Reviews
Here's a list of shout outs to restaurants in Atlantic Beach and the Outer Banks.
Check in here before you make that trip and find the places you really should try to munch at.
Atlantic Beach's Historic Fort Macon State Park
As a result of several attacks along America's East Coast and Beaufort's Inlet, Fort Macon was built, beginning in 1826, as part of a chain of coastal defenses. The five sided fort, designed by General Simon Bernard and built by the Army Corps Of Engineers, was taken over by the Confederate Army in 1861 and held for a year until Union forces retook it and held it for the remainder of the American Civil War.
Fort Macon was garrisoned for the Spanish-American War, but was decommissioned and sold to North Carolina in 1923. Once more, the fort was garrisoned for three years during World War II, but has served as a monument and centerpiece for the state park, that bears its name, since.
Today, the beautiful park located at the extreme northeast end of Bogue Banks offers not only tours of the interesting Fort Macon, but also has one of the cleanest beach access and facilities I've seen anywhere. These facilities include a public bathouse , snackbar, and plenty of free parking. Of course, the beautiful dunes block any view of the facilities from the beach.
For my money (which is none), Fort Macon State Park is the place to beach at, and it is literally three minutes from Atlantic Beach.
Fertile Breeding Grounds Of Atlantic Beach
There are seven known sea turtle species in the world and five of the seven, the most common being the Loggerhead, use the area of the Crystal Coast as their nesting grounds.
Every morning, from March to October, volunteers comb the beaches for turtle trails that may lead to a nest. The nest area is roped off and watched at night, every night, until the turtles hatch; about 50-60 days after being laid.
Always Be A Scout ~ Never be without Your Camera
How many times have you kicked yourself for missing that once in a lifetime shot? I bet a bunch.
Digital cameras, like the one used to take the photo shown here, are the handiest things to keep around. Most take up very little room and have a very high economic justification in that you waste no film or need to wait to have your film developed.
Are you going to miss that amazing moment again?
What's Your Preference In Beaches?
Beaches that run astride calm, clear waters are often busy with tourists and nightlife. I've been on beaches like these in the Bahamas, Hawaii, and the Gulf Coast. They're fun and there's a large amount of eye candy there.
The Outer Banks are a totally different story. Most places from the Crystal Coast to Kitty Hawk are lacking a lot of commercial development on the beachfront and the surf is a bit more active. Some towns seem to roll up their sidewalks at 10 p.m. or so. The density of tourists is a lot less. In fact, some places along the Outer Banks' beaches will afford one to feel like they have a private beach. And it's all free. There are beaches, such as as the one's at Fort Macon State Park that are unsurpassed in their beauty and seclusion from a touristy feel.
What makes a beach for you?

I like both but I usually end up at bathing beaches with the swimmers, surfers and beauties. We have been lucky to spend a few summers camping on California beaches at the state campgrounds.

I've been to the Outer Banks and spent some time there, it's an incredible place. I definitely prefer the less traveled beaches like these ones on the southern end of the peninsula.

If you don't have one, stop in and say hello. I'm under that big Zima umbrella. Oh yeah, can you bring me a Margarita on the rocks, no salt? I'd surely appreciate it.

- This is my 3rd visit here, not only because of the beautiful pictures and the sound of the surf, but because my computer keeps kicking me off before I can leave a comment. But I am nothing but dedicated to completing my tour of Senior Squid favorite places. And I am so sorry, I spilled your margarita before I could get it to you, or perhaps I drank it due to my computer frustrations. Anyway, love the lens, especially those cool borders!
