Why Atlantic Station?

Have you ever been somewhere and just knew you belonged there? That's how I feel about Atlantic Station. Most people don't get it, but the best way I can describe it is to say that the tall buildings are like trees to me. The hustle and bustle is a great place for this city born and bred girl. And waking up in a high rise apartment feels like waking up in heaven.

I am not sure where things will lead me or if I ever find another place I love as much, but Atlantic Station is what I consider to be the ultimate in living.

About Atlantic Station

Atlantic Station is a large brownfield redevelopment project at the northwestern edge of Midtown Atlanta, Georgia. Atlantic Station is being master developed by AIG Global Real Estate and local development partner Jacoby Development, Inc. First planned in the mid-1990s and officially opened in 2005, its 138 acres (558,000 m²) of mixed-use land development is on the former brownfield site of the Atlantic Steel Mill, which after years of industrial use and contamination was remediated by its two developers along with AIG Environmental, Inc. At completion, the redevelopment is ultimately projected to include 15,000,000 square feet (1,400,000 m2) of retail, office, residential and hotel space as well as 11 acres (45,000 m2) of public parks.[1] Its size encouraged the Postal Service to award the neighborhood its own ZIP code: 30363.

2/17/11 New Owner Announces Changes at Atlantic Station
The new owners of Atlantic Station have plans to get rid of the mall "feel" and make it more like "Atlanta".

Toro expects about 25 percent of retailers will change over the next three years. And so will the feel of Atlantic Station.

"It's like a great cocktail party. Food, cocktails, lighting, music and a great guest list and that is where we think we can take the property," said Toro.as the new general manager, Tom Miles' challenge is to make it a destination.

One immediate change -- valet parking will be back and on the street level starting this weekend.

High Rise Living

Atlantic Station residences consist of townhomes, townhome-like single homes, and high-rise apartments... my favorite.

The Atlantic

The Atlantic Close-upIf Atlantic Station is the ultimate place to live, The Atlantic Residences is the ultimate in apartments.

Most specifically, I want to live somewhere between floors 25 and 38 in a 2 bedroom plus den.

Then again, a corner penthouse on floor 45 would be nice too, but I don't want to get crazy.

We came pretty close to putting money down on an apartment, but there really isn't room for the teenagers and we don't want to rush them out!.... So we need to wait one more year to when at least one graduates before revisiting it.

But isn't living in an Atlantic Station High Rise Expensive?

If you can afford and Atlanta Mc Mansion... really afford it, then you can afford an Atlantic Station apartment.

We actually made a spreadsheet with our current household budget and our prospective household budget for the Atlantic Station Apartment that we want. There is only a $300 difference. The equity in your home definitely helps, although it could be higher if the economy were better. If and when we do it, it will be our last move... unless you count assisted living if we need it.

What's with all those rules

Oops. It seems that the photo I took a couple of weeks ago may be outlawed. My family and I were headed over to The Atlantic yesterday, but trying to find the Subway sandwich place first before our meeting with the sales agent. Both my husband and my son were carrying professional Rebel cameras. My son had to finish 2 rolls for his photography class so he had the film camera, and my husband wanted instant gratification, so he had the digital...

We were clearly lost and a security guard offered to help us. She gave us instructions and a very polite warning. She gestured at the camera around my son's neck and said, I see you are carrying cameras. You need to know that you are not allowed to take pictures of the buildings in Atlantic Station... only pictures of people are allowed. Being an artist, I furrowed my brow and repeated... "pictures of people?" 'You can't just take pictures of people', I thought. She clarified, "no not strangers... you can only take pictures of each other". Our puzzled looked caused her to add, "this is private property, and it's not allowed". So we shrugged our shoulders and headed off to the sandwich shop.

On the drive in, we had noticed and discussed the private property signs and even discussed them. We thought they were akin to the private property, no soliciting signs in our neighborhood which did little to actually keep solicitors out. The thing is, it is really a private property, a large residential mall... malls have their own rules, and hence, a more restrictive community.

You can read more about the no-pictures rule at The Urban Architecture blog. The photographer didn't enjoy his experience at all, and is against this type of corporate owned development. Still, I did manage to find some good photos here... and also a mention of photo Nazis.

Atlantic Station is just a small part of Atlanta

If Atlantic Station doesn't fit your bill, remember it is just a small part of the bigger International city.
