The World's Largest Moth

As a teenager living some years in the Philippines, I remember seeing some Atlas Moths around our garden, school, and in the "province".

The incredible size and intricate coloring both spiked my curiosity and freaked me out at the same time. Little did I know then that these unique "bugs" only live in their adult form for 1 to 2 weeks and do not even have a mouth to feed.

To compensate for my former ignorance I put together this collection of images and information about Attacus Atlas, the Atlas Moth. Hopefully, future generations will be more enlightened than I was to marvel and wonder at this exceptional example of biodiversity.

Hi, I was followed by an Atlas Moth a few years ago in the north of Thailand. It was flying circles over me in a food market when i decided to leave the place with the feeling that it was there because of me. When i arrived back home using my motorbike about 5 km from there i heard a sound at my window and there it was. I opened my window and let it enter. It stayed with me for 2 days before it layed a few tiny eggs and dissapeared again. Until now i have this happening in my mind. Huge !!

That's a great story, Martin! It sure makes you wonder. Did those eggs ever hatch?

I grew up with these in the Philippines! I loved them. I haven't seen any since we have been back for 6 years now. Wonder there they all are. Great lens!
