Line dancing music yesterday and today
In the eyes of many people line dancing still has a cowboy image and is considered to be the kind of dance that goes with country-western music.
This has been true until 1970s, when the hustle line dance became widely popular.
By 1990s line dancing grew more and more popular due to:
- expanding variety of music
- pop bands releasing music videos, featuring performances that later became line dances
- and consequently, more and more young people taking up line dancing
On most DJ's playlists nowadays, country music most likely makes up only the minority of tunes. Instead, there seems to be a harmony of various musical styles, both new and old.
Genres include: Celtic, Swing, Pop, Rock, Big Band, Folk (like waltz and polka) - almost any kind of music with regular beat.
Line dancing is a lot of fun and a great way to exercise and socialize - for all genders and ages.

What is a line dance?
A line dance is choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows without regard for the gender of the individuals, all facing the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time. Line dancers are not in physical contact with each other. Older "line dances" have lines in which the dancers face each other, or the "line" is a circle, or all dancers in the "line" follow a leader around the dance floor; while holding the hand of the dancers beside them.International Folk Dan...

Step-by-step presentation of Atomik Polka line dance
It has only one draw-back. The instructor speaks French but obviously line dance teachers around the world use the original names of the steps so those are all in English.
Besides, the way this lady shows every step is so slow and obvious that with practice even a beginner can learn this intermediate level dance.

Wow. Really fun lens. As you know, I am from Cleveland, Ohio and when I grew up there were all kinds of polka shows on TV. Very strong ethnic community here.
