This book has been both banned and acclaimed

In 1967 Nelson Doubleday supposedly ordered the entire first print run of J.G. Ballard's novel ATROCITY EXHIBITION destroyed after reading the short story "Why I Want To F*^& Ronald Regan."

The book was then released two years later by another publisher under the title "Love and Nalpalm: Export USA."

In 1990, this book was re-published in an expanded volume with the original title by Re/Search Publications, in San Francisco, CA.

THE ATROCITY EXHIBITION

This Re/Search publication really is a great edition. In addition to reproducing Ballard's seminal work, the volume is also illustrated with surreal and fascinating drawings by medical illustrator Phoebe Gloeckner, and black-and-white photographs by Ana Barrado. Both women have produced spot-on "Ballardian" images to go with the text.

And speaking of the text, along with Ballard's work the publishers have included notes and comments from the author alongside the text, material that has never been published elsewhere. They've also included four short stories whose flow and structure make them good companions to the novel.

A gorgeous and insightful addition to any Ballard collection.

Concerning the Atrocity Exhibition

Flatline_Constructs 2.9 The Atrocity Exhibition
In his key works, Ballard performs a literal de-territorialization of Science Fiction, a shift from the thematics of spatial domination that, according to Baudrillard, had dominated it in its "classical" period. What Ballard has himself characterised as his stress on "inner" as opposed to "outer" space could give the misleading impression that Ballard has made a phenomenological move, privileging a psychological interiority over a concern with "the outside world". Nothing could be further from the truth. In Ballard's world, the distinction between inner and outer has fallen away, but not in favour of interiority.
Literary Encyclopedia: The Atrocity Exhibition
The Atrocity Exhibition is Ballard's most controversial and challenging experimental novel. Between 1966 and 1969 Ballard published fifteen individual texts, or 'condensed novels' across a wide range of avant-garde and literary magazines. In 1970, these fifteen stories were revised and collected as sections or 'chapters' in the edition of The Atrocity Exhibition most commonly known to readers today.
Powell's Books - The Atrocity Exhibition by J. G. Ballard
The Atrocity Exhibition is J.G. Ballard's most complex, disturbing work, with fabulous photos by Ana Barrado and artwork by Phoebe Gloeckner...
J.G. Ballard, the oracle of Shepperton
Much of J.G. Ballard's earlier work is taken up with exploring a wide variety of surrealistic disasters, of a world turning into crystal, a world drowning and reverting to a primeval Triassic swamp, or a world becoming an ur-desert. Though cut from much the same imagery as the classic science fiction disaster stories, Ballard's disasters clearly have a psychological component that addresses the world within us as much as the world without.
J.G. Ballard
J.G. Ballard has long worked with intriguing structures. The Atrocity Exhibition (1970), for example, is composed of a series of highly compressed short stories which Ballard calls "condensed novels." These are linked thematically and formally.
RE/Search Publications -- Books -- Atrocity Exhibition by J.G. Ballard
A large-format, illustrated edition, Atrocity Exhibition is widely regarded as Ballard's finest, most complex work. Withdrawn by E.P. Dutton after having been shredded by Doubleday, this outrageous work was finally in a small edition by Grove before lapsing out-of-print. with four additional fiction peices, extensive annotations (a book in themselves).
