Why Audio Books are so Convenient
Audio is a great format for books!
You don't need you hands to 'read' audio books, and you don't need your eyes to read audiobooks! The only sense you need are your ears to listen to audio books.
That means you can listen to a audiobook in the dark and you can listen to audiobooks when you have your hands literally in the dough, or in the dirt or when you have oily, smeary hands. Nobody in his right mind would even attempt to touch the paper pages of a printed book under these conditions, but with an audio book this is not even remotely a problem!

Audio Book Format
Audiobooks come in different formats
In the beginning audio books were recorded on vynil records, and these records had a very limited capacity. Because of this reduced capacity, books were mostly recorded in a co called abridged (shortened) version. Even then it was not unusual for an audio book to contain several (up to 12 and more...) large vynil disks. You can imagine that this made it impossible to listen to them on the go!
Next came the audiocassette, a large step up as far as convenience was concerned, now up to 2 hours could be recorded on one cassette, and the players started to become portable also. They still were cumbersome at the beginning, but then Sony launched the walkman, and for the first time audiobooks became truly portable.
With the new CD and soon the DVD, capacities were once more increased, the players were still very portable and battery life improved too. Now it started to become possible to take several audio books on a trip without having to carry a separate suitcase just for the audio books.
... and over the last two years, MP3 players and downloadable audio books, coupled with the internet make it now feasible, to carry nearly as many audio books as you like with you, requiring little more space than a pack of cigarettes!
This is a quite a development, and it all took place in less than one hundred years!

What is MP3? - Here you find your answers:
MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage, as well as a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players. MP3 is an audio-specific format that was designed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. The group was formed by several teams of engineers at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen, Germany, AT&T-Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ, USA, Thomson-Brandt, and Category: :fr - :CCETT|CCETT as well as others. It was approved as an ISO/IEC standard in 1991.
The use in MP3 of a lossy compression algorithm is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent the audio recording and still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio for most listeners. An MP3 file that is created using the mid-range bit rate setting of 128 kbit/s will result in a file that is typically about 1/10th the size of the CD file created from the original audio source. An MP3 file can also be constructed at higher or lower bit rates, with higher or lower resulting quality. The compression works by reducing accuracy of certain parts of sound that are deemed beyond the auditory resolution ability of most people. This method is commonly referred to as perceptual coding. It internally provides a representation of sound within a short term time/frequency analysis window, by using psychoacoustic models to discard or reduce precision of components less audible to human hearing, and recording the remaining information in an efficient manner. This is relatively similar to the principles used by JPEG, an image compression format.
