An audio book would normally appear after - or simultaneously with - a published book, not before. I believe this is going to reverse itself very quickly as the audio books are faster to make. Many publishers are experimenting with changes, since Audible and iTunes are interested in their products several weeks before the book. Publishers always want to hit the bestseller list at No. 1, and there had been some concern that releasing an audio version first would drain away sales from the hard cover. The publishers are now seeing that the early audio book release is simply good upfront marketing for the hard cover release. Publishers also increasingly are releasing recordings that might never materialize as books. The cost is minimal for the publisher and if it turns into a winner then they publish.
