Spyware - What is it, and What it can do

If your on the internet, with out good protection, knowledge, you are bound to get it..

"Spyware is any software that performs sneaky activities behind the user's back--these activities can range from installing itself onto your computer, gathering information on you and transmitting it across the Internet, downloading files or running programs on your computer, messing with your system settings, or even trying to silently pass itself on to others. it may don disguises to hide itself and its intentions. It will try very hard not to be noticed. It will persist in the background even after you tell it to go away. It might even try to hide from you, if it knows you're looking for it!"

Collects information from your computer without your knowledge and/or consent, transmits a unique code to identify you (for tracking purposes) without your knowledge and/or consent, collects/transmits information about your computer use or other habits without your knowledge and/or consent, installs itself on your computer without your knowledge and/or consent, keeps reinstalling itself, no matter how many times you remove it, and performs other unwholesome duties without your knowledge and/or consent.

Spyware on your computer is the same as an informant with a spy camera. Like a mole, it crawls through all your files, takes note of where you go, grabs your email address book, copies your chats, records your online banking sites, looks at your credit card information, picks up your user names and passwords, and more.

If your not sure about a program your ready to install, OR WORSE,, wants to install itself on YOUR PC, check this link above.

Adware - What is it, and What it can do

Adware is a close relative of spyware. Adware is software that is installed on your computer to show you advertisements. Adware can slow your PC by using System Memory, and CPU cycles. Adware can also slow your Internet connection by using bandwidth to retrieve advertisements. In addition, adware can increase the instability of your system because many adware applications are not programmed well. And the most frustrating is, adware can annoy you and waste huge amounts of your time by popping unwanted ads onto your screen, which require you to close them before you can get back to using your pc.

What is a Virus?

Basic Signs of Infection are, but not limited to:

A slow down in performance, does a folder on PC take forever to open, you click your Start Menu, and 2 - 15 minutes later it finally responds? Windows takes forever to boot, startup? Internet Explorer errors, lockups, and home page keeps changing on you? Excessive "pop-up" advertisements? Email or Internet access a lot slower? No connection to internet anymore? When trying to open a Program or file you receive a "file corruption error". The list can actually go on, but I'm sure you are getting the idea by now.

Some viruses have been coded, or programed to deactivate your anti virus program, some will "crash" or reboot your PC when attempting to update your anti virus program, or when your AV scans and finds the virus file also.

What is a System "Firewall"

Basically is an important "wall" between you, and the World Wide Web, the internet that is. Sort of a "cloaking device" that protects you, and your computer from the entire world. It will monitor traffic attempting to get in, and also suspicious traffic trying to communicate out of your pc. Without a system "Firewall" set up, an attacker, can easily gain full control of your computer while on the internet. Thats right, he can erase your harddrive, steal sensitive documents and personnel info, make your mouse move, open a folder, etc without you moving, or opening it.

An attacker can get through any type of modem - DSL, cable, 56K, 28.8 or whatever. If the device gets you on the internet, you are vulnerable. For those with a DSL, cable modem or other "always-on" connection, you MUST get a firewall. This is critical, as your machine is always live and it most likely has a fixed IP address. This makes it easier for your system to be "found" and attacked. An updated Windows Xp Operating system has a built in firewall, that gives you basic protection, IF you have it on, and activated. What a personal firewall does is isolate your computer from the rest of the internet. The best protection completely hides your computer - this is called stealth mode.

Plain and simple, think of your computer to the world wide web, as a big wall with doorways, many, many, many, doorways. The doors can be seen, the hinges, and doorhandles are visible. This easily tells an attacker that someone lives here. And "he" knocks, pulls, and tries to bust a door open, to get in. Now, with a firewall setup, picture the same example above,, BUT NOW, the door hinges, and handles are removed, that wall is now painted, "masked" over in one color, there are no visible signs of gaining entry, these "doors" or communication ports on your computer are now "stealth", or camouflaged. He doesn't bother, and runs away....

Windows built in firewall is basic, does the job, and is better than nothing at all. But there are more advanced retail firewall software packages. Just about any retail anti virus program now has incorporated a firewall into there "Security Suite" package.

Zone Alarm or "ZA" as been highly rated, they do have a free version that gives great protection, with many advanced features. Few others that comes to mind out and about are: Outpost Firewall, Comodo Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall and several others around.

Zone Alarm Firewall Free Version

If you go with a software firewall like Zone Alarm, it's best to make sure Windows built in firewall is turned off. Running more than 1 system firewall can cause un-needed connection problems.
