Augustus Leopold Egg (British, 1836-1919)

Augustus Leopold Egg was born the son of a wealthy gunsmith in London. He studied at Sass Drawing School and later enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in 1836. Though never having visited Italy, Egg's earliest paintings consisted of Italian subjects but later he would become known for his historical works depicting English domestic life.

Egg supported the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, particularly ideas regarding color theory and for a time shared a studio with William Holman Hunt. Along with fellow artists William Powell Frith and Richard Dadd, Egg formed a sketching club which was called 'The Clique'. The group met weekly in Dadd's rooms where they would draw subjects often taken from the works of Byron or Shakespeare and then pick which was best sketch among them.

He was also a member of the Guild of Literature founded by Egg's close friend, Charles Dickens in order to raise funds for struggling artists and writers. Amateur theatrical productions were put together by Dickens to generate monies to support the group and Egg often both designed costumes and preformed.

In 1848, Egg was elected ARA and in 1860 RA. Shortly after being elected RA he was required to leave England for health reasons. Augustus Leopold Egg died in Algiers in 1863.

Augustus Leopold Egg may be found at the Tate Gallery, London and the National Portrait Gallery, London.
