How to make funky fabulous yarn falls

Ranked #13,683 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #203,629 overall

For those of us who wanna be funky and fabulous!

This is a super easy, super fun project. If you like the look I am sporting in the picture, I invite you to give it a try!

Step 1:

Choose your yarn

I've been making these for sale for three years, and I have discovered some things along the way! In order to have the absolute coolest looking yarn falls, you need to make them from three kinds of yarn:

Something puffy.

Red Heart Light and Lofty is my personal favorite - just browse the store and try to find the softest, bulkiest, most-resembling-human-dreads yarn you can find.

Something furry.

I'm talking eyelash yarn! It can be short or long, solid or rainbow colored, smooth or ratty, but the eyelash yarn in your mix will really set off your hair falls!

Something funky.

You also want some kind of novelty yarn in there, something that is gonna stand out and make your falls belong to you and you alone! I tend to really like the puffball type yarns, like lion brand funky fur, but anything original will work!

Step 2:

Tools and Materials

Materials:

Yarn
Pony tail holder

Tools:
Sharp scissors
A chair with a high back

I recommend getting one of those heavy duty pony tail holders. I have made the hair falls with both, and I will not use a regular one anymore - it tends to tangle more that way. :-P

The chair with the high back is to wrap the yarn around - keep in mind that the length of your yarn falls will be equal to the width of whatever you use as a wrapping mechanism. I have used a table, and the arms of an office chair, and a book before as well...

Step 3:

Make 'Em!

Here goes! Have your scissors nearby and handy. I always forget... even though I have been doing this for years, I still wind up finishing all the wraps, then begging my sister to bring me scissors since I can't let go of the yarn to go get them!

Open up your yarn, and just drop the skeins on the floor. Gather the strands together, and wrap them around your chair. For single yarn falls, I wrap the yarn about 15 times. For double, I do 10 wraps for each, or 20 total. You can do more or less if desired.

Hold and cut your yarn as in the picture at left. Attach the yarn to your ponytail holder with a macrame hitch knot:

Grab two to three strands of each kind of yarn. Make a loop with your yarn, push the loop thru your ponytail holder, then pass the ends of the yarn through your loop and pull! Repeat till you have used up all your yarn.

Step 4:

Show 'Em Off!

When you finish your yarn hair falls, please take a pic and show off your new funky and fabulous look!

Post your photo on Flickr, and then enter it's url here :-)

If that sounds like waaay too much work...

You can buy them on ebay!

Yarn hair falls are pretty easy to find for sale as well. Here is a sample of the auctions currently listed for "Yarn Hair Falls" on ebay!
