Good BBQ

Rudy's
Locations all over town. It is a Texas chain and is known for its smoked turkey, chopped beef, and of course, the sauce. Must have the creamed corn. It's like dessert. Trust me.

The Green Mesquite

Hole in the wall. Okay briscuit. The ribs were better. Pretty cheap.

Bert's
3563 Far West Blvd #109
512-474-2613
Only one location burned down. Have the Turbo. Just do it.

Ironworks BBQ
Iron Works Barbecue
100 Red River St
(512) 478-4855
Beef Ribs are probably your best bet here

Franklin's BBQ
900 E. 11th St.
Austin, TX 78702
(512) 653-1187
Arguably, the most famous BBQ place in town (or America). They open at 11 and sell meat until the batch sells out....usually around two. So lines form well before the place actually opens. This upsets many people (Even famous ones).

Out of Austin Barbeque

Technically not in town, but still worth the trip

The Salt Lick
18300 FM Rd 1826
Driftwood, TX 78619
512-858-4959

Currently #1 in our poll, Salt Lick's family-style dining atmosphere is something everyone needs to experience. It is well worth it for you and some friends to load up a cooler full of beer (its BYOB), head down south, and feast for a couple of hours.

Smitty's

Lockhart, Texas 78644

Voted one of the top five best restaurants in Texas. Great excuse for a trip on a weekend day.

Overrated Barbeque in Austin

In my opinion, they just aren't that great, but you can decide for yourself

Lambert's
401 W 2nd Street
512-494-1500

Fancy BBQ that isn't bad, just not worth the price.
Other Reviews Citysearch / Yelp / Chowhound

Stubb's
801 Red River St
512-480-8341

Great place to listen to music, not the best place to grab some meat. It could be convenient before a show. I think the Gospel Brunch on Sunday is fantastic, but don't make room in your schedule to eat the barbecue there.

County Line
5204 RR 2222
6500 Bee Cave Rd

Its the leader in the reader poll but it still isn't my favorite. I went back and had their beef ribs. Quite tasty. May have to rethink my opinion on this place.
Other Reviews Citysearch

Uncle Billy's Brew and Cue
1530 Barton Springs Rd
(512) 476-0100

This place not only serves bbq but also makes home brew and usually has some live music. I have heard good things about the beer, but the brisket was nothing to spectacular and the sides were disappointing.

I tried to get BBQ at Franklin's yesterday. Got there at 11:34am, 34 minutes after opening. The line was out the two and the wait was 2 hours. Crazy. Guess I'll have to try again another day. My favorite is Salt Lick.

When I lived in Austin i was telling everyone about Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor, absolutely the best ever! however I had to move to Camas WA to read an article in The Dallas Morning News to see them claim that Louie Mueller Barbecue was the best in the state! In 1983 I was driving to Michigan for the Xmas holiday and we stopped at Rudy Muellers right when they were closing to try and get a bite fr the road. well the old guy running the place grabbed several pounds of meats and wrapped them up in wax paper and charged us about 3 dollars. To this day the best ever, just 25 minutes out of Austin.
