Color & Light - one of Austin's newest favorite bands! 

Rocking out to great live music is one of the true joys of living in Austin. Being inspired - now that's a treasure! When my friend Heather Bishop, a musician, poet, and writer who never ceases to inspire me, told me I should come hear the band Color & Light playing at Stubb's Barbecue (www.stubbsaustin.com), I knew I should listen. I was expecting a pretty good time; I wasn't expecting to be inspired.

Carolyn Wonderland Plays the Saxon Pub, Then Austin City Limits Show

Miss Understood CD Showcases Wondrous Talent of Carolyn Wonderland

It was standing room only as usual at the Saxon Pub in South Austin and the place was buzzing with rumors that Wonderland's days playing smaller venues like this one might just be numbered. Wonderland was preparing to tape her Austin City Limits appearance on June 5th (according to her Myspace page.) Rare Magazine featured her in their Music issue (March 2008.) The Houston Press called her the "blues Wonderwoman," and for good reason. She writes, she sings, I've lost count of how many instruments she plays and she even whistles a solo in "I'm the Man" (from her 'Alcohol and Salvation' CD.)

Guy Forsyth Calico Girl CD Review

All of the tracks sound great and do justice to Guy Forsyth and the band members - which is a pretty tall order. There is nothing that beats seeing them live - but this is damn good. The liner notes give the backstory of the songs that you usually get in the live shows, and more. For those not familiar with the story of this album, most of these songs have been recorded before, but because of issues over the rights, are not available to Forsyth himself to sell. So he recorded them all over again.

What happens when we decide "no work this weekend - we're just going to go out and listen to music?" We ended up scribbling notes on napkins, and taking pictures with my mobile phone. Lesson learned: I don't actually do vacations very well - and neither does DJ. Just suck it up and take the flipping cameras and notebook.

The Low Down on Guy Forsyth's Calico Girl CD Release Party at Antone's Night Club

I have a love/hate thing for Antone's Night Club. There are some bands you just have to see at Antone's because that's the only place they play. However, since they've taken out just about every single chair in the place, standing for 3+ hours is truly not my favorite way to spend an evening. I rarely go there, or to the Continental Club for the same reason. In total, for Nathan Singleton, The BlueBonnets and Guy Forsyth, we stood for about 5 hours. And it was totally worth it.

Nathan Singelton and His Sideshow Tragedy graced the stage first with a hard-edged rock and blues set. By the end of it, we wondered if the bass player, Justin Wade Thompson, in a Jimi Hendrix-channeling trance, was going to either light fire to his guitar, or start breaking up some equipment. He didn't of course, but it was a very impressive way to warm up the crowd.

(Guy Forsyth appears on NSHST's CD, "Borrowed Guitars, Unwound Hearts, and Broken Strings" on "Prisoner," the sixth track on the album.)

Next up The BlueBonnets kicked it into high gear with Dominique Davalos, Kathy Valentine (both of The Delphines), Eve Monsees (of Eve Monsees and the Exiles), and Clem Burke (of Blondie fame) filling in for Kristy McInnis, on drums. The BlueBonnet's may not play together very often these days, but when they do, they really cook!

With the crowd appropriately hot and bothered, the lights dimmed and the first track of Calico Girl, "Where'd You Get the Music," started. Unfortunately, with the crowd discussing the darkened stage, it was almost impossible to hear the lyrics that gave insight to this album's history. Anticipation built and Guy Forsyth and band members Will Landin, Rob Hooper, Mark Addison (who also produced the album) filed on stage. As soon as Forsyth launched into the next song, "105," (from "Love Songs for and Against" CD) the crowd was ready to rock out.

The woman next to me repeatedly screaming "Taxi" and "Mona" would be disappointed, as Forsyth mostly stuck to tracks on the new album (except for crowd-pleasing neo-Vaudeville "Shake it in a Circular Motion" from the "Love Songs for and Against" CD.) Stubbs Barbecue Live Music
Indoor and outdoor amphitheater and indoor venue has some balcony sitting if you get their early. Be sure to get their early so you can enjoy some tasty bbq before the show!
Antone's
World famous live music - many well-known artists got their start at Antone's!
Nutty Brown Cafe
Nutty Brown Cafe is an outdoor venue with fairly good parking availability and great sound. The layout of the Cafe (outdoor stages) is very family friendly as well.
Elysium Night Club
A Goth haven and an excellent venue dancing as well for live music. I saw the fabulous Voltaire here and had a great time. The sound is really best standing in front of the stage, however. Sitting to the side (nearer to the bar), distortion is noticeable.
Cactus Cafe on UT campus
This is by far my favorite venue. Mostly accoustic acts play here. The setting is intimate; the sound is amazing!! One of the best places to hear music in Austin.
Saxon Pub
Great accoustics, another smaller club with a more intimate atmosphere and at least some amount of parking (down the road). But get there early if you actually want to sit down - it fills up very fast! Carolyn Wonderland is a fantastic musician that plays frequently here - catch her while you can!
Merkaba Lounge
Good venue for those Austinites living north. This lounge books some excellent acts, such as Alpha Rev, Homer Hiccum and the Rocket Boys, and Jets Under Fire. The lounge had some sound issues the night I was there (popping on the high and low ends) but I'm told that's unusual for the venue.

Originally, spontaneously-formed Good Time Supper Club song writers Ed Jurdi, Gordy Quist, and Colin Brooks were all doing ongoing sets at Momo's in Austin, with Seth Whitney on bass and John Chipman on drums.

This studio endeavor has most cohesive sound yet. This is a great mix of roots rock, folk and bluesy country. They also put on one of the best shows in town. The fact that you have strong vocalists, strong song writers and strong guitar players in one band - all working together - it's either going to blow-up in a huge clash of egos, or it's going to be freaking amazing. Thankfully for Austin fans, it's door number two in spades.

Patty Griffin's vocals on Maple Tears is a delight. Her Myspace Page can be found HERE

High points: Colin Brook's lap steel can make you weak in the knees. Sensual vocals that would have rocked my socks off had I been wearing any socks. There was not a single weak point in their live show.

Ray Bonneville - Well-travelled Bluesman Enchants Austin! 

Ray Bonnevelle is a master guitar and harmonica player, song writer, and vocalist, but more importantly, he tells stories that stop you in your tracks. Great storytellers know it's not just the story, it's how you tell it and timing is everything. You have to slow it down - don't tell everything too fast. In fact, don't everything, period. And that's what Ray Bonneville does. He tells just enough. It's like you've walked into bar and overheard a hushed conversation in a dark corner booth. You know just enough, but not too much. You want more, but that would be telling.

Bonneville's vocal style is gritty yet fluid, world-weary at times but still completely accessible. He is a gifted songwriter with an enviable economy of words.

Voltaire Brings Wicked Show to Austin's Elysium 

It was a dark and stormy night... No, honestly, it was. A really, really dark and stormy night! Voltaire and Ego Likeness rode into Elysium Nightclub in Austin, Texas like a vintage horror movie, with lightning, sheets of rain, and gusts of wind. It may have cost them some of numbers in the audience, but the ambience could not be beat.

Ever the generous performer, Voltaire made a great deal of time for his fans. Loads of pictures were taken. Tons of questions answered. By the time Voltaire made his way to the stage in his top hat and spats, the audience was surging to the stage, ready for the show. Of course some Voltaire virgins, perhaps visiting Elysium on a bet, were slightly confused by his first song, "I am Rammstein." But no matter, by the time he was halfway through everyone's favorite bawdy drinking song, "Ex Lover's Lover" - everyone was having a fabulously goth time.

What ultimately makes Voltaire so appealing is his mix of deliciously wicked humour a la George Carlin and Tom Lehrer (Masochism Tango, anyone?) and geeky tendencies seen in Star Wars inspired (ultra-naughty) Cantina and the Trekkie favorite Sexy Data Tango and The USS Make-Sh*t-Up. This irresistable combination makes him a hit at Dragoncon, and New York Anime Festivals.

Recently, Voltaire signed with Dancing Ferrets Discs next CD. Songs to appear on the next CD will be "Death Death" (the Devil Devil Devil Devil Evil Evil Evil Evil song,) "Robber Baron, The Industrial Revolution (And How It Ruined My Life,)" "This Ship's Going Down, To The Bottom Of The Sea," as well as "The Beast of Pirate's Bay" and "Happy Birthday (My Olde Friend.)" He's to have the CD out by Halloween 2008.

Voltaire has a line of Pocket Goth plushies and DEADY vinyl toys.

He's the voice that sings the song "Brains" on The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (as well as "Land of the Dead" on the new Cartoon Network movie Billy and Mandy's Big Boogie Adventure

He started his career as a stop-motion animator working on TV commercials in the mid 80s. He went on to direct commercials and station IDs for MTV and the SciFi Channel but then left to pursue his career as a comic book artist and musician. According, again, to his Myspace page, he's just finished a feature-length film script. He describes it as, "sort of like Evil Dead meets Mall Rats meets Ghost Busters."

Meanwhile, he finished "Transrexia," a stop-motion film he started several years ago. Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs narrated this prehistoric postcard of love gone wrong between a stop-motion T-rex and a Pterodactyl. Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy_QH6j2SOg.

The film was accepted at Florida Music Festival 2008 Indie Film Jam, Seattle True Independent Film Festival, and Twin Rivers Media Festival in Asheville, North Carolina.

Another musician you just have to catch - because I can't adequately describe (though I've tried in a few articles) how great his show is. Generally, I like catching him at Nutty Brown where the audience can really let loose with all that dance space. The Saxon Pub is also a great venue - but it's small, so get there early.
