The Great South Land

I am proud to be an Australian and I love our way of life. Aussie's like the idea of a "fair go" for all people and are usually fairly laid back. 'She's right mate' is a pretty typical way of thinking. Most Australians live near the coastal fringes but there are quite a few of us who live in the bush or the great Outback!.

We love the great outdoors, BBQ's in summer, beach cricket and most water sports are popular in our land. We can grow almost any crop somewhere in our great country and have a diverse and interesting diet. Our cuisine is a real melting pot of the worlds best.

The History of Australia Day

26th January - Australia Day

Desert inspirationIn 1788 on the 26th of January when Captain Arthur Phillip formally declared possesion of the Colony of NSW and was placed as the first Governer General. That is how we got the date but there is more to the Australian history story. Wikipedia has this to say:

"The History of Australia refers to the history of the area and people of Commonwealth of Australia and its preceding Indigenous and colonial societies. Aboriginal Australians are believed to have first arrived on the Australian mainland by boat from the Indonesian archipelago between 40,000 to 60,000 years ago. They established among the longest surviving artistic, musical and spiritual traditions known on Earth.

The first uncontested landing in Australia by Europeans was by Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon in 1606. European explorers followed intermittently until, in 1770, James Cook charted the East Coast of Australia[1] for Britain and returned with accounts favouring colonisation at Botany Bay (now in Sydney), New South Wales. A First Fleet of British ships arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788[2] to establish a penal colony. Other colonies were established by Britain around the continent and European explorers went deep into the interior throughout the 19th century. Introduced disease and conflict with the British colonists greatly weakened Indigenous Australians throughout the period.

Regardless of how the date came to be Australians from all diverse backgrounds chose to celebrate the wonderful life style that our great country gives us. It is a time to realise how blessed we are to be Australian it is also a time to recommit ourselves to keeping this land great.

Kingoonya historic railway town - outback Australia

The town that once was, was not, is now but maybe not again.

Kingoonya

Kingoonya is town is on the east-west and north-south railway line and that used to be on the Stuart Highway, until they moved the highway that is. It was a railway service town that once boasted a large population, however with the advent of modern railways service towns are no longer needed and when they shifted the highway 40km east Kingoonya became a ghost town.

Then about 6 years ago Maria and Colin saw potential in the old Hotel building that was full of rubbish and in bad need of repair. Someone had purchased the land but was not doing anything with it so they rented the property and proceeded to do it up. Kingoonya was back on the map.

Kingoonya became a popular place to stay for those doing the four wheel drive adventure track called "Googs track". It was also a popular stop with those who were travelling from Western Australian to Northern Australia as the dirt road through Kingoonya cut off hours of driving. On top of this station staff from surrounding Sheep and Cattle stations frequented the Hotel.

Unfortuately Maria's partner died last year in tragic circumstances and as there was no will the Hotel was forced to close. The current land owners have made things extremely difficult for Maria and she is unable to find a way to keep the Hotel going. This means that the towns people about 10 in all will now also lose the support of Government funding for important infrastructure such as water.

It looks as though this town that was so recently re-born will now soon face becoming a Ghost town once again.

You can purchase your piece of history of Kingoonya by clicking on the photograph here. Current sale of T-shirts, post cards and magnets are available for a short time.

A Cocky in the bush.

What the heck is a Cocky/cockie?

Cockies in the bushCockies they are everywhere here, we have them by the thousands. They wake me up every morning when they fly in huge flocks over my home from early November to late January for this is the time when the young ones leave the nest. They screech and squawk waiting to be fed. We have white ones (lesser Corella) and pink ones (Galahs). When they are in big numbers they can do damage to the trees stripping the top branches of the new shoots. They can also wreck T.V. Antennas and other things as well. Cockies (Cockatoos) breed in such big numbers on the edge of the outback because conditions are just right for them. They have spilt grains to eat after harvest and there are plenty of Stock water troughs to drink from.

The cockies are not just a nuisance to those wishing to sleep in but to the other Australian Cockies as well. I am talking about the farmers, yep we call our Aussie farmers Cockies, especially the ones who run huge the huge farms near the outback. it is thought that they originally got their name because the first farmers set up their farms near the edge of permanent water holes (billabongs) just like you find the other type of cocky always near water.

The Galah and the Lesser Corella both make good pets but be warned they live a long time in captivity and they mate for life. They need attention and diversion or else they could drive you nuts screeching cause they are bored. You can teach your pet cocky to talk the males do better at this though.

Galahs, Corellas, Cockatoos

They make great pets

Have you got a Cocky at home buy a treat or toy to keep him happy

Things we do on Australia Day

We celebrate what's great

Australian icon - Kangaroo

On Australia Day we like to honour those who help to make our Nation great so each community usually has a celebration and award giving ceremony. In Quorn - Flinders Ranges South Australia we start the day with a big BBQ Breakfast of sausages, bacon and eggs. This is held at our local swimming pool because it is usually very hot here in January.

The flag is always raised at the beginning of the celebration and an acknowledgement made of "Country" (where we recognise the indigenous original inhabitants of our area - the Adnamatna people). Then we have breakfast. After the meal the Australia Day awards are handed out to honour local citizens who have made great contributions to our community.

Then all the big and little kids hit the pool until early afternoon. There are also ceremonies for people who wish to become Australian Citizens held around our country on this day.

Honouring those who came before

Adnyamathanha and more

Desert inspiration

In South Australia there are several major people groups:

- The Western Desert Cultural Region
-The South Australian Gulf Cultural Region
- Lake Eyre Cultural Region
- Murray Darling(Part of Riverina) Cultural Region
- South East Coast Cultural Region

The cultures in these regions are often very similar with only slight variations in lifestyle and dialect. It was common for these groups to trade amongst them selves which enhanced the similarities among the groups. However I present the Adnyamathanha people because it is in their country that I currently reside and I have been able to learn a little about their culture.

Rather than put their story into my words I will put a link to one of their sites so you can learn a little more about them and their culture. Just click on the photograph of the barking Gecko in this section to go there.

Australia Day 2010 with Lamb of course

A blast from the past. Sam Kekovich

The Australian sense of humour is very satirical and we often poke fun at ourselves. Sometimes it is good to see the funny side of being human. I hope you enjoy. By the way Sam is of Serbian extraction another great country that loves it's lamb

I grew up with this T.V. classic and then some 25 years later whilst working in Zambia Salvation Army nursing home I heard that famous song "Skippy, Skippy, Skippy the bush kangaroo" I couldn't believe it. Here in Africa it was a favourite of the seniors at the Nursing Home.
