Australian Aboriginal Music

Aboriginal Music Artists of today come from a variety of backgrounds and they all have their own stories to tell. The music styles vary as much as the people themselves. Some incorporate traditional instruments and tell the stories of their dreaming. Some show a strong western influence and others will use a mix of both.

On this page you will be introduced to some of my favourites, learn some of the facts about Aboriginal Music, and hopefully, you will also be entertained.

Gurrumul

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is a trully amazing musical artist. He has a voice that has been described as hauntingly beautiful. He sings in his native Yolgnu language and speaks very little english. He has also been blind since birth.

As well as being an accomplished singer, Gurrumul has also taught himself to play several instruments, including drums, didgeridoo, keyboards and guitar. He is left handed but uses a right handed guitar as that was the only type available to him as a child.

Casey Donovan

Casey's first album was recorded after becoming the winner of the second series of Australian Idol in 2004. Back then she was a shy 16 year old with a powerful voice but struggled with her success and family issues, later being abandoned by the record studio.

Since then she has matured as an artist and gone on to bigger and better things. Her recent "Big Bold and Sexy" tour has been a raging success and things are starting to look up for this talented young Aussie

Johnny Huckle

A proud Wiradjuri man, Johnny sings about his family and the land of his dreaming. He may be small in stature but he has a heart as big as this country. This man is also part of my family, being my wife's cousin. Johnny has performed internatonally and has several music awards although has not been picked up by a major record label.

Johnny has released three solo albums and also a children's album in collaboration with Helen Moran. He holds regularly workshops and live performances and especially enjoys performing for children. His culture is very important to him and he shares it with anybody willing to listen.

His music can be purchased by visiting his website http://http://johnnyhuckle.com.au

Beautiful is the only word needed to describe the voice of Geoffrey Gurrumul. I first heard this man sing in 2008 and honestly could not get enough. His voice is hauntingly beautiful. He sings in his native language and in english but you really do not need to know the words. He has been described as having the best voice ever recorded in this country.
