Australian Desert Gobies

Australian Desert Gobies are fun pets!

Unfortunately, they only live about 12-18 months.

This is our male Australian Desert Goby in his cave.

Unfortunately he doesn't like the cave so much anymore, because we took it out of his tank after he laid eggs in it.

He's unhappy, but we have about 5-7 Australian Desert Goby fry right now, so I'm happy.

8-5-08 All of our adult Australian Desert Gobies have passed away, but we still have 8 fry that are showing their adult colors.

One of the males had claimed a cave, and I think that pretty soon we'll be hearing the pitter patter of little feet...or fry as the case may be.

It was really hard to lose all of the adults within such a short time span, but that's life (and death) for the Australian Desert Goby.

This is how it all starts - Australian Desert Goby Eggs on a piece of driftwood.

Rember those eggs up there? Here's one of the males, who's starting to show his adult colors.

Australian Desert Goby Fry Update

4/9/2008

Our Australian Desert Gobies are about 7 weeks old (they hatched February 17) now, and they're doing great. I think we have about 7 - they're big enough that you can see them all when they come hopping around looking for baby brine shrimp.

We can actually see them from across the room now, and they're swimming up towards the top of the tank a lot more than they did before.

The biggest fry are about twice the size of the smallest fry, so I'm thinking that they are males.

Our male Australian Desert Goby is twice the size of the two females, so if I'm right it looks like the size differentiation starts pretty early.

They're still pretty small, so it's hard to get a good picture of them, but I'm working on it.

Australian Desert Gobies love to dig

Australian Desert Gobies love to dig, so if you have some make sure that they can't dig under anything in their tank, and make it fall on them.

All heavy decorations should be placed on the bottom of the tank, so that you don't have to worry about your pets commiting goby suicide.

Australian Desert Goby Update

9-12-08

We just noticed eggs in the cave - our Australian Desert Gobies hatched on 2/17, and they're already laying eggs!

I'm so excited.

The cave the eggs were in was not the cave of the largest male, so I'm really surprised.

I also have the feeling that this may not be the first batch of fry - but the others were probably eaten if there were any.

We caught 2 Desert Gobies in a fresh water creek in Northern Queensland, roughly 6 inches long, with black spots runing down the side. Took me forever to find out what they were, thought they were a lungfish, then a mutated flathead of some kind, but glad i found out what it is, they love to dig, mine will go from one end of the tank to the other (5 foot) under the pebbles, sort of like that movie with the big earthworms and how you can see the bulge forming nderground, yer, made sense in my head.!

Yes! i've been trying to get them in the uk, and only managed to get hold of some gold variety.
i've only had them about a week now. they are super cute and still half grown, and i can't wait to breed them!
they get on fine in my 240 litre community, and seem to enjoy tearing around with my panda corys which are in the midst of breeding!

I have 3 adult Australian Desert Gobies, and about 5 fry. The fry are really tiny.

I love watching the gobies hop around, and it's so funny when the male goby opens his (huge) mouth as wide as he can when I get to close to his aquarium.

The gobies are very peaceful, and didn't bother any of the other fish when they were in the community tank.

The male goby did chase every one way from his eggs though!

No

Hi Judith, we got ours from a local fishkeeper. If you're near Minneapolis, Terreaquatics has them at times. I wish I could find some more for me.

Have you ever seen Australian Desert Gobies? I got mine from a breeder on my fish forums, but I've heard about them before.

I've never seen them before though.

Prime Review

Seachem Prime 500ml

I've been using Prime pretty much since I've been keeping fish. I did switch to another brand when I couldn't get Prime locally, and I had more trouble with the fish tanks. I know it was horrible, but it was years ago, and I can't remember what happened. I use Prime in my saltwater and freshwater tanks, and I've never had a problem with it.
