Ranked #2,681 in Animals, #57,122 overall

Kangaroos, Koalas, Wombats, Crocodiles, Snakes, Echidnas, Platypus, Emus, Cockatoos... so many different animals to see!

There are more unique species native to Australia than any other country, so if you're planning a holiday "down under" you'll definitely want to check out at least one of our many zoos and wildlife sanctuaries while you are here.

Although in the past animals were kept in zoos purely for human entertainment, today the zoos of Australia are more interested in educating the public about animals, and taking part in conservation efforts such as captive breeding programs. Having said that, a trip to the zoo is still a very entertaining day out that will be enjoyed by the whole family!

Most zoos in Australia are home to a variety of native animals as well as some from overseas. The websites for each zoo have lists of the animals that are on display, so check out the links below for more information!

Even if you're not going to be visiting Australia any time soon, you can still take a virtual tour through the zoos of Australia! There are some amazing photos on the zoo sites, it's almost like being there.

Australia's most popular zoos!

There are many great zoos to choose from in Australia.

Check out these links to their websites!
Australia Zoo
Located in Queensland, about an hour's drive north of Brisbane. Probably Australia's most famous zoo thanks to the work of Steve Irwin.

This zoo is truly a world leader, with large enclosures, passionate staff and a 'Crocoseum' that seats 5000 people. It's my favourite zoo, because they not only provide great education and entertainment, they also put their money where their mouth is and preserve habitat for wild animals.
Taronga Zoo and Western Plains Zoo
Two popular zoos in New South Wales. Taronga Zoo is located in Sydney and is well known for its wonderful views of Sydney Harbour. Western Plains Zoo is located in Dubbo in rural NSW.

I visited Taronga Zoo recently. If you would like to find out more about this great zoo click here. The red pandas are very cute!

Red Panda Taronga Zoo
Zoos Victoria
This site provides information on Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary. That should be enough to keep you busy for a while when you're in Victoria!
Perth Zoo
Located in Western Australia. I used to love going there when I was a kid. It was one of my favourite places in the whole world!
Adelaide and Monarto Zoos
This site provides information two zoos located in South Australia. I'd love to go to both one day! If you go there, make sure you let me know what they're like!
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
Located on the Gold Coast in Queensland, about an hour's drive south of Brisbane. The sanctuary is well known for the wild lorikeet feeding that takes place daily, where the beautiful parrots often perch on people's arms, shoulders and heads! Check out the video below called "Birds Down Under"
Alma Park Zoo
A small zoo in Queensland, located about an hour's drive north of Brisbane.

You're guaranteed plenty of great photo opportunities at the zoo!

There are some great zoo photographers on Flickr! Click on the pictures to see a larger version, and you can even check out more of the photographers' great photos!
