Authentic Leadership is comprised two things:

The 3 C's of Authentic Leadership

1. Character. Develop a plan to cultivate your character. I'm partial to Eastern methods, as there is less judgment, scapegoating and life-after-death fantasy, but wisdom can be found everywhere, in every church, synagogue and mosque. Whichever path or paths you pursue, keep in mind that wisdom is everywhere - every situation is an opportunity to grow and progress. Think of character in terms of personal growth, not in terms of attainment of qualities. Progress cannot be measured in absolute terms, but is easily recognized when present. The important thing is to get started right now. Immediately after you read this, put to paper your plan for personal growth and spiritual exploration, whether that be Bible study, meditation, volunteering, reading, changing careers, ending unhealthy relationships, journal writing, changing personal habits, etc. or a combination thereof. One meaningful way to build progress is to start with the low hanging fruit. Begin with whatever is easiest for you to change. Once you develop your plan, stick to it and review it often. Hang the timeline on the wall in front of the toilet or a tape a concatenated version onto the perimeter of your laptop. Be sure that each day you understand why you are doing what you are doing. I'm a big fan of retreats, so I urge you to consider unplugging for at least a weekend, if not a week or two to get started. Check out Landmark Forum, Woman Within or the Mankind Project. If you live on the coasts you have many more options such as Esalen, New York Open Center, the Omega Institute, or Findhorn in Europe. If you're looking for a non-religious support group and activities for your own individual personal growth and spiritual exploration, check out your local Unitarian Universalist congregation.

2. Communication. As mentioned these skills will present themselves as you need them. However, if you cannot wait to begin or perceive serious deficiencies with regard to interpersonal communication, please check out Toastmasters and workshops aimed at interpersonal communication. Writing clearly and effectively is also important, but not nearly as important as how you conduct yourself in the presence of others.

3. Comfort with Risk. This will present itself as needed, but if you are one of the many creatures of habit just do one thing different each day. Just one thing and soon aversion to risk will be history.
