What is autism

Autism is a brain development disorder which can impact one out of 500 people and severely hamper their enjoyment of life. The greater the awareness in society of autism, its causes and how to accommodate people with autism would be easier it will be for families impacted by this condition to lead more normal lives.

A person with autism will tend to have difficulty in communicating with with other people and will also exhibit some repetitive behaviours. Symptoms, and their severity differ from person to person although a child with the condition will tend to display the symptoms at a very early age perhaps before they are three years old.

Autism causes

Many parents are fearful that their children will be impacted by autism. This fear is heightened because there appear to be an increasing number of children with autism these days although this most probably is due to improved detection and increased visibility.

Unfortunately there isn't a list of pros and courses for autism. There are many theories as to events and circumstances which can trigger autism but many of these are not based upon fact. One main cause is thought to be hereditary, investigations are continuing but the genes which would pass on autism have not yet been identified. and other main suspect area is the environment including external pollution, increased exposure to chemicals and even preventative inoculations, more work is required before any of these could be positively identified and the medical community has ruled out inoculations as a cause.

Far more work is required in this area before any definitive cause can be established.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation's primary goal is to help ensure that all children with developmental disabilities are totally immersed in all life has to offer. Clay Aiken, from American Idol is the co-founder along with Diane Bubel. While Clay was pursuing a career in Special Education he worked with Diane's son, Mike (age 13), who had been diagnosed with autism. While working with Mike, they realized Mike was being turned away from all the normal everyday child activities because of his disability. The Foundation creates awareness and provides much needed funding to qualified programs serving families in need of funds to assist individuals in life skills, one-to-one social skills, and more importantly, to programs that provide social interaction with non-disabled peers. They provide summer camps and work with local YMCA's to make their goal of inclusion a reality.
