Autism And The Charities Offering Hope
See that little guy over there? That's my son, his name is Austin. I love him with all of my heart, and he loves being just like everyone else. It's a bit harder for him though, you see... he has Autism.
I was just 20 years old when he was born, it was a proud moment in my life and I do the best I can to help his mother raise a happy, loving little boy. He's 8 years old now and, while he still struggles academically compared to other children his age, he's doing some great things that other parents with Autistic children aren't as fortunate to experience. He plays well with other kids, he loves his parents and little brother, has friends (both in real life and his invisible friend 'Taco' - who for some reason is always naked). He learned to ride a bike, and now even rides a dirtbike.
We are so fortunate that Austin has earned himself as close to a normal life as an Autistic kid can, but it wasn't without cost. In addition to the emotional strain it puts on a family; Austin has endured countless hundreds of hours of physical and occupational therapy, gets treated differently by those who don't understand his condition, and struggles every day with school work and learning new things so he doesn't fall even further behind. He doesn't know it yet, but he's my inspiration.

Furtunately, The World Is Listening
While there is much speculation as to why Autism occurs, it's causes, and what can be done to prevent or cure this disorder are all far beyond the scope of this Lens. There are some wonderful Charity organizations that not only help children with Autism live better lives, they're leading the fight and working for a cure.In addition to highlighting the leading Autism charities, I'd also like to showcase some of the wonderful Squidoo Lenses offering insight and information about Autism. Getting the word out, education and awareness, is just as helpful as being able to make financial contribution. We can all help in our own ways.
Autistic Inspiration
These videos show just how amazing Autistic children can be, and that with hard work and inspiration it's possible to do great things - even with Autism. Everyday more is learned, and with the help of charities and parents who care it gets better.

Notable Autism Charities
The following Autism charities are trusted, dedicated organizations leading the way to raise public awareness and fund the research working to improve the lives of those with Autism. They're also inspiring hope that one day prevention, or even a cure, is within our reach.
- Autism Speaks
- Dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder. Make a donation.
- Autism Research Institute
- Hub of a worldwide network of parents and professionals concerned with autism. The Autism Research Institute (ARI) was founded in 1967 to conduct and foster scientific research designed to improve the methods of diagnosing, treating, and preventing autism. ARI also disseminates research findings to parents and others worldwide seeking help. The ARI data bank, the world's largest, contains over 40,000 detailed case histories of autistic children from over 60 countries. Make a donation.
- Autism Society of America
- The nation's leading grassroots autism organization, exists to improve the lives of all affected by autism. Increasing public awareness about the day-to-day issues faced by people on the spectrum, advocating for appropriate services for individuals across the lifespan, and providing the latest information regarding treatment, education, research and advocacy. Make a donation.
- Generation Rescue
- Jenny McCarthy's Autism Organization, an international movement of scientists, physicians and parent-volunteers researching the causes and treatments for autism and mentoring thousands of families in recovering their children from autism. Make a donation.
- National Autism Association
- Encourage those in the autism community to never give up in their search to help their loved ones reach their full potential, funding efforts toward this end through appropriate research for finding a cure for the neurological damage from which so many affected by autism suffer. Make a donation.
- Autism One
- Nonprofit organization started by a small group of parents of children with autism to address three areas: education, advocacy, and fundraising. Parents are and must remain the driving force of our community, the stakes are too high and the issues too sacred to delegate to outside interests. Make a donation.
- Unlocking Autism
- Founded in February of 1999 by two mothers and a grandmother who came together for one primary purpose - to obtain information about how to help children with autism and to get that information as quickly as possible to the parents of newly diagnosed children. Make a donation.
- Talk About Curing Autism
- Provides information, resources, and support to families affected by autism. For families who have just received the autism diagnosis, TACA aims to speed up the cycle time from the autism diagnosis to effective treatments. TACA helps to strengthen the autism community by connecting families and the professionals who can help them, allowing them to share stories and information to help people with autism be the best they can be. Make a donation.
- Autism Canada
- Believes in a holistic and comprehensive approach to treating autism and encourages all parents to seek information on the biomedical, behavioural and nutritional treatment options that are available. Wants to ultimately change the way that autism is diagnosed and treated by the professional community. Make a donation.
- Treating Autism
- Membership Society that provides parents with a lifeline. Members receive a regular newsletter with developments in the biomedical and therapeutic world, a lending library of autism-specific resources, special offers with essential suppliers and discounts on conferences. A volunteer-run charity devoted to helping people with autism reach their full potential. Make a donation
