Walk for Autism Awareness

Hi, I am the mother of an autistic spectrum child named Sean and I am walking for Autism Speaks. Actually, our whole family walking. It's hard to believe that I made this lens last year and its walk time again. I know times are tough and its hard to give, so I have donated a pair of Chicago Bears tickets to raffle off to my sponsors. Please help. So many kids need your support.

Peace & Love,

Kat

2009 Chicago Walk Now for Autism

This year I'm raffling off Bears tickets

Join me and and my family in our efforts to support Walk Now for Autism!

"Your child has autism."

These four simple words define the facts. They are useful in explaining the past but they do not predict the future. They do not convey the devastating toll that autism has had on our family nor limit our determinedness to overcome this disorder.

I am participating in Walk Now for Autism to help find a cure for autism. As you may know, my son Sean has a form of autism called PDD-NOS. This stands for Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Sean is a very sweet boy who enjoys Star Wars, Lego video games and Tae Kwon Do. He started high school this year and is involved with the Best Buddies program at his school. Thankfully, he is high functioning, although he still requires special ed and many services and therapies in school and out.

Autism is the second most common developmental disorder in the United States affecting one in every 150 children born today. Despite some promising discoveries, the cause of autism is unknown and a cure does not exist. Research is crucial. Every 20 minutes another child is diagnosed with autism. Not only must we find ways to improve the quality of life for children and adults with autism, but we also must find a cure, and soon.

By participating in this event, our hope is that we will soon hear "Your child no longer has autism."

My Walk Now for Autism Donation page
I'm halfway to my $1000 fundraising goal for Autism Speaks. Can you help me reach my goal by May 1, 2009? I know times are tough and so I'm sweetening the deal with my raffles. Each chance is now $5 and you could win a pair of Bears tickets, a rare Beatles Red Nose Day T-shirt or gift cards. Won't you please, please help me?

A great song about a little boy named Sean

Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. This song inspired me to name my son Sean.

About Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism, and to advocating for the needs of affected families. It was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism. Bob Wright is Vice Chairman, General Electric, and served as chief executive officer of NBC for more than twenty years. Autism Speaks has merged with both the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR) and Cure Autism Now (CAN), bringing together the nation's three leading autism advocacy organizations. Autism Society of America
ASA, the nation's leading grassroots autism organization, exists to improve the lives of all affected by autism.
