How I found the best auto insurance policy

When I graduated college I had to start paying my own bills because my parents finally agreed it was time to let go of my hand. Among the other things I learned, finding an auto-policy, is one of the biggest hassles on the planet. My Squidoo is dedicated to the arduous search I did and all the good research I ended up with as a result, that I want to share with everybody else so they don't feel as helpless as me.

Legal Stuff

The first thing you need to know is that driving without some type of auto-policy is illegal in the United States. Every state requires you have at least one of the following coverages:

Liability-Insurance
Personal-Injury-Protection
Uninsured-Motorist-Coverage

Now, let me explain what each one covers in detail because honestly I had no idea what these meant when I started shopping for a car-quote. For all the information you need for auto-and-car-insurance, check out my links!

Liability-Insurance is basically protection from somebody else who wants to sue you. Essentially if you get into an accident that is your fault, it is legal in some states (in "no fault" states it is not) for the other person involved to sue you for damages such as psychological or physical trauma.

Personal-Injury-Protection is required in no-fault states where no one person can be convicted of being at fault for an accident. This coverage helps pay for lost wages, personal injury (thus the name) and other expenses that may arise because of an auto-accident.

Uninsured-motorist-coverage is to protect you from bad drivers who don't have any insurance to pay in you the case of an accident. In the states where liability-coverage is not necessary, they require some kind of uninsured motorist coverage. It essentially protects you without requiring you protect yourself.
