One of the best books on the home built Autogyro or gyroplanes.
Autogyros
The name, Autogyro, is a Spanish name, which is a type of rotorcraft that uses an unpowered rotor in autorotation, which develops lift. The propeller, however, is engine-powered, similar to the fixed-wing aircraft to provide thrust. In order to generate rotation, the autogyro's rotor must have air flowing through the rotor disc.
The autogyro was invented by the Spanish engineer, Juan de la Cieva. This aircraft was designed to fly at slow speeds and was first flown on January 9, 1923 at the Cuatro Vientos Airfield in Madrid. It resembled the fixed-wing aircraft of that day. It had a front-mounted engine and propeller in a tractor configuration to pull the aircraft through the air.
The Pitcairn and Kellett Companies made further innovations under license from Cierva in the 1920's and 30's. The late-model autogyros have a rear-mounted engine and propeller in a pusher configuration patterned after Dr. Igor Bensen's designs. The term Autogyro was a trademark of the Cierva Autogyro Company and the term Gyrocopter was used by E. Burke Wilford who developed the Reiseler Kreiser feathering rotor equipped gyroplane in the first part of the 20th century. The gyroplane was later adopted as a trademark by Bensen Aircraft.
Because of unstable aerodynamics and structural deficiencies in their rotors, De la Cierva's first three designs (C.1, C.2, and C.3) were not useable. The C.4 made its first successful flight on January 9, 1923. The C.6 followed these when Cierva accepted an offer from the Scottish industrialist, James G. Weir, to establish the Cierva Autogyro Company in England. Britain became the world centre of autogyro development after the demonstration of the C.6 before the British Air Ministry at RAE Farnborough on October 20, 1925. A crash in early 1927 caused by blade root failure led to improvement of the rotor hub design. A drag hinge was added in conjunction with the flapping hinge to allow each blade to move fore and aft and this allowed relief of in-plane stresses. This development led up to the Cierva C.8. The C.8 made the first rotorcraft crossing of the English Channel on September 18, 1928 followed by a tour of Europe.
In 1928, Harold Frederick Pitcairn, an U.S. industrialist, upon hearing of the successful flights of the autogyro, visited De la Cierva again in England. He was very impressed by the autogyro's safe vertical descent capability. Pitcairn purchased a C.8 L.IV, which had a Wright whirlwind engine. And after returning to the U.S. December 1928, this autogyro was redesigned as a C.8W. After this, autogyros were produced by the Pitcairn Autogiro Company in the U.S. and by Fock-Wulf of Germany.
After many changes and alterations, in 1934 the Cierva C.30 series became the first rotorcraft to take off and land on the deck of a ship. Later that same year during the leftist Asturias' revolt in October, an autogyro made a reconnaissance flight for the Royal troops marking the first military employment of a rotorcraft. Later Helicopters mainly replaced the rotorcraft. Various types of rotorcraft were employed during WWll.
Of special interest, Amelia Earhart flew a Pitcairn PCA-2 in 1931 making a women's world altitude record of 18,415 feet. On November 16, 2002, Wing Commander, Ken Wallis, at age 89 years of age increased the 3km speed record to 207.7 km/h (129.1 mph) and set another world record as the oldest pilot to set a world record. AMAZING!!! HATS OFF TO KEN WALLIS!
