I'm first of all going to explain a little about what I see is one of the main advantages of social bookmarking, and why.

Many affiliates know about and were badly hit by googles Mayday update, me included. I have poured over forums and spent days, if not weeks doing my own research into what google likes to see now.

One of the things I see when using various tools, maybe I'll talk about those another day, is that google loves backlinks, that's common knowledge, but I see a pattern for those backlinks that has totaly changed how I get links to my site. I see that google wants to see more backlinks to internal pages, not just the home page. I have looked at countless key phrases to analyse the backlinks into sites scoring highly in the serps.

I could write pages, but as this was meant as a summary of what I see, I'll keep it short...ish.

It seems to me that google now doesn't treat a sites home page as being more important than an internal page, certainly not as much as it used to. Since most people seem to get more links for the home page than internal pages, then it often leaves the internal pages with no or very few incoming links. If those internal pages had incoming links, they would compete with home pages with as many incoming links on an equal footing.

Basically, an internal page can score higher than a page from an authority site, and I am talking of the major online retailers, if that page has more backlinks with the anchor text for the phrase they are trying to rank on, as long as the phrase appears in the Title tag of the page as well, I see this as being very important. Very often the major sites won't have backlinks to the actual page you are competing with, this is their achilles heel, and as they often have hundreds of thousands of pages, if not millions, it would be impractical for them to get backlinks to all internal pages, this is where you (and me) can jump in and steal the show.

Get your keywords in the title tag of a page, (and order or number of words doesn't seem to matter as far as I can see, just as long as they are there somewhere), and get backlinks to the page with your keyphrase in the anchor text. Of course, use your keyphrase in your description tag and on the page a few times including in h1 tags etc. These all give you a boost.

It's also common knowledge that sites that were doing well for long tail key phrases were hit hard by the Mayday update. I think this is simply that a lot of those long tail key phrases were not really optomized for, they just happened to be there on the page with little competition. Now, those pages need backlinks to the page to score well, and at least some of the words in the key phrase in the title tag and anchor text will help.

But here's the problem, getting backlinks to internal pages is not as easy as to the home page. Directories usually only allow you to link to the home page, article sites usually only allow you to link to your home page. Old fashioned link exchanges are a way to get internal links, but they are hard work, and people expect a link back in exchange.

Social bookmark sites such as delicious allow links to anywhere within a site. Not only that, but there is not limit to how many pages a bookmarking site allows it's users to link to on a site, or how many times it's users can link to a single page on a site, the more it's users bookmark a page, the more votes for that page.

This is why I think social bookmarking sites are now such an important part of your linking strategy.

As I see it, there are several advantages to social bookmarking.

1. You can deep link to your site, not just link to the home page. An advantage over adding your site to directories and article sites where you can only link to your home page.

2. Search engines think highly of social bookmarking sites and will visit often, ok, not all bookmarking sites use Dofollow, but many do, and those that don't can still send visitors to your site. As multiple users add your links to their accounts, then the number of votes for your site increases. For example, if 10 people have added your site to delicious, then you will be seen on delicious as an authority with 10 votes. When people click on your tags, you start to appear higher in the results. Pick the right tags (very important, SocialAdr explain it all) and you could be appearing at the top above your competition, and that should send visitors to your site.

3. As your links are being added by other people to their own accounts, and many of these people have had accounts for a very long time, your links are being included on established pages, not just pages that were created yesterday.

4. Each time your site is added to a social bookmarking account, you don't just get the one link to your site, You get a link from the users account your page was added to, you get a link from the category page and you get links from the pages for the tags you entered. That's multiple ways to be indexed and found. Social bookmarking can be very powerful stuff.
