Negative Thinking - A Way Of Being

Do you get caught in the negative thinking loop?

Maybe it feels like you're on the "hamster wheel", just going over and over in your head an issue. -- This represents: Anxiety

Often we can be found scanning our own brain/ memories for things to worry about or rehash when nothing in our present is particularly troubling. Why would anyone look for trouble, in this manner?

In part, we are creatures of habit. Many have in essence become conditioned to being in a state of "worry", it has for some, become their NORMAL. When current circumstances are free from stress the scanning, or thinking of previous events or interactions that caused us to feel unsettled are searched for so one's normal state of worry can be re-established. Once re-established there is to some degree a level of satisfaction achieved.

What is normal is familiar and what is familiar is comfortable. Please note, the word "healthy" is not included in the previous sentence, it is not an accidental omission.

Consider this; An individual is raised in a negative, unstable and abusive environment. As this individual grows and matures they have become accostumed to living life in an environment that is unstable, unpredictable, negative and probably permeates with a sense of personal danger to some degree. This is their normal. All of this also may translate into internal states of anxiety and stress, which is also their normal.

Negative Thinking is just one way that individuals learn to maintain their internal state of anxiety and stress - a familiar state of being. And remember familiar often translates to comfortable.

You may be saying, "Anxiety and stress is NOT comfortable!" and you would be correct, to a point. Comfortable has different meanings, here I am referring to comfort in terms of an unhealthy normal. That is why changing these bad habits can be very difficult.

I can help you to make these changes and I encourage you to get in touch if you are in the Ventura County, CA area.

Negative Thinking

Depression and Anxiety tends to put a negative slant on your view of the world, this is known as distorted thinking and impacts the way you experience the world around you.

3 Elements Common To Negative Thinkers;

Catastrophizing: Everything tends to be "the worst case scenario"

All-or-nothing thinking: Looking at things in black-and-white terms. Most of life happens in the gray area.

Making assumptions or mind-reading

Tips:

Try to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts
Spend time with positive people

Note:

Negative Thinking & Your Physical Health
Negativity impacts your physical well being: your heart, your mind

If you think you will win, there are chances you can. If you think you will lose, you most likely will.

What Are You Focusing On?

What we tend to focus on impacts how we feel and navigate through life.

If you find yourself mostly focusing on negative events, interactions and experiences - you may also experience the world as a hostile, unpleasant and constantly challenging adversary. Truth is, we all have choice in this matter.

To get you started, write down something positive in your life, in your day or week. Now build on that, step by step. Simple enough? Not really, therapy is a great way to navigate through this exercise.

Hope & Self Value

"Hope" is the thing with feathers--
That perches in the soul--
And sings the tune without the words--
And never stops--at all--
Author: Emily Dickinson

If you don't value yourself,
other people won't do it for you.

Why Use A Gratitude List?

Gratitude is extremely powerful and can't be activated unless consciously practiced every day of our lives. It can turn a sour mood into a joyous one, make us laugh at our own silly shortcomings, and open our hearts up to increased appreciation of all that surrounds us. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out, it just takes willingness.

Do the following ritual acts daily for at least 1 week at a time, after that week re-exam how you're feeling.

A great topic, but perhaps a tad thin, maybe some examples of how changing your thought patterns actually turned someone's life around? I'm working on that myself, lol, so would love to get role models!
