Wikipedia
An automobile, motor car or car is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels, and to be constructed principally for the transport of people rather than goods. However, the term automobile is far from precise, because there are many types of vehicles that do similar tasks.
As of 2002, there were 590 million passenger cars worldwide (roughly one car per eleven people). Around the world, there were about 806 million cars and light trucks on the road in 2007; they burn over 260 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel yearly. The numbers are increasing rapidly, especially in China and India. Plunkett Research, "Automobile Industry Introduction" (2008)
Automobile Industry Impact on US Economy
On December 19th, 2008, the White House and US Treasury announced the automotive industry bailout. Short-term loans in the amount of $17.4 billion dollars would be given to US automakers, by the US Government, to help these auto manufacturers have the time needed to restructure their industry. However, it still remains to be seen, what the effect of these loans will be the US Economy. In other related matters, the negative wake of these loans, talk of bankruptcy of the 'Big 3' automakers, and requests for additional bailouts has greatly affected many auto dealers and consumers.
In the short term, it is one of the best times in recent history to buy a new vehicle. This is due to the fact that their was such huge increases in gas prices during the earlier months of 2008. These heavily inflated gas prices hit gas guzzling SUV and truck sales hard, and in response, prices were greatly slashed. This now combined with the fact that auto dealers everywhere have a critical need to move vehicles, has caused a buyers market. However, these are not typical times for either American consumers or the US economy.
There are four significant factors significantly hindering the US Auto Industry as a whole:
Firstly, a great majority of our nation faces job-insecurity. Most American's are holding onto their money, because in today's' job market no-one is safe and who knows when the axe may fall on you. So buying a vehicle for most American's right now is not even in the picture.
Secondly, even if buying a car is on your 'to-do' list, unless you plan on paying cash, getting financing can be very difficult. The freeze in the credit industry has impacted the US economy making it difficult for many consumers to obtain financing for new cars.
Thirdly, consumer confidence in domestic automakers is in the toilet, especially with all this talk about the 'Big 3' declaring bankruptcy. No rational person is going to go out and purchase a new vehicle, given the fact, that there are significant economic factors which indicate it is unclear as to whether or not in a year from now that this company will still be in business.
Finally, since people are not buying new cars, they are holding onto their old cars longer which means that used cars have seriously decreased in their availability.
The question on everyone's mind is whether or not this bailout is an indicator of a light at the end of the tunnel for the US economy. Unfortunately this still remains to be answered. One can only pray that for American families, auto dealers and automakers alike, that the answer is YES!
In closing, I would just like to add that if you are tired of all the job-security issues which face us in these hard economic times, you might want to keep in mind that you have other options that will financially far exceed what you may be able to earn in your lifetime as part of traditional 'Corporate America'. If you are putting all the hard work and long hours in anyway, maybe you should consider a job in the home-based internet business industry. It would be a chance for you to use those job skills such as: computer skills, listening skills and customer service skills, in a industry that has the potential to make you a five figure per month income. It will also give you more time for yourself and for your family if that is important to you. This was one of the key reasons I opted out of main stream 'Corporate America'. Anyway, this is just food for thought, in the end we all must choose what is right for each of us. Do your own research and then let the facts speak to you as to what direction is right for you. God Bless you on your road to personal and financial success.
